“Very Little Chance” Matt Law’s Insight Into Levy’s Transfer Thoughts A Major Positive For Once

By Joe Fish -

Daniel Levy is absolutely determined not to sell any of Tottenham’s star players this summer, even if we don’t qualify for the Champions League.

Failure to play in Europe’s top club competition for the first time in five seasons would result in a further £50m hit, at a time when the club are already facing major financial trouble amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

This is expected to restrict Jose Mourinho’s transfer budget and the talk is that Spurs will have to sell before buying or be limited to frees and loans.

However, a source has told The Telegraph that there is “very little” chance of the chairman cashing in on Harry Kane, Son Heung-min or Dele Alli.

The source told The Telegraph: “Daniel has always worked hard to sell players at the top of the market when he has had to and there is very little chance he will sell anybody of any great value in a deflated market.”

That trio is the only unsellable assets we have, in my opinion, although Giovani Lo Celso might soon enter that category if he picks up where he left off prior to lockdown when we return against Manchester United on Friday.

We can generate enough income to be active in the market by selling others.

That being said, it is interesting that the source added the caveat of Levy not selling in a deflated market. So Kane etc. may only be safe for this summer.

Unless Levy has an ace up his sleeve I think he is missing a trick here. At present I do
not think we are good enough to challenge for top 4 next season. City and Liverpool
are way ahead of us. Chelsea are buying very shrewdly and I can’t imagine Man Utd
will stick with what they have. It is a fantasy to suggest we will be ok and to
put our trust in Jose. Even Pep couldn’t sort us out! If we don’t have much money,
selling one of the jewels is our only option. Otherwise, this time next year we will be in
a similar position and have wasted a season.

There is going to be a big problem selling any of our unwanted players. First off, not many clubs will have any money at all to spend. The market will be driven by the few that do. Chelsea, Utd, City and perhaps Newcastle if their sale goes through will be the first to move. After they do, other clubs may have some cash to spend but they may not even choose to do so if they need to cover their COVID 19 losses.

In short, the market for cast offs will be thin on the ground, and for expensive cast offs it will be non existent. The notion we will get big money for anyone apart from our biggest stars is foolhardy.

If we have to sell to buy, we will be waiting all transfer window and perhaps drawing blanks again.

He might not want to sell, doesn’t mean those players won’t ask to leave. Which is almost nailed on.
