Alan Hutton says Dele Alli will probably have asked Spurs to allow him to leave the club as they are being linked with a move for Christian Eriksen.
Alli has fallen down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho, and he has interest from PSG.
Spurs consider him to be a quality option to turn to when their current regulars are unavailable.
However, the midfielder wants to play more often and perhaps earn a place in the England squad for the Euros later this year.
Eriksen left Spurs for Inter Milan about a year ago, but his move to the Italian side hasn’t been a successful one and both parties want to end the relationship.
He has been linked with a return to Spurs, and Hutton believes that should give Alli the chance to go where he can play.
He says Alli is a player that simply has to play and get his confidence back because it is very low right now.
Hutton told Football Insider: “I’m a player and I’m seeing those links, the next morning I’m in at the manager: ‘You’ve been linked with Eriksen so, can I leave?’
“I think they have to let him go, they have to, in my opinion. See, as a player, his confidence is as low as it is and you’re just hurting him even more – his value is going down, his confidence is going down, you’re not helping the club and you’re not helping the player.
“For the player’s sake, let him go and play. He’s got years left on his contract, it’s only going to help Tottenham if you think about it. If he goes away there and does well, his value goes up, they might buy him, he could come back and be the player that you always thought he was, he could get back in the team.
“You’re only doing good for him, allowing him to go and play football. I don’t see why you’re keeping him at Tottenham to keep him in the stands, that makes no sense.”
