Tottenham star place is in trouble following last night’s performance

By Bruce Grove -

Lucas Moura might lose his place in the Tottenham first-team if he continues to struggle as he did against Burnley last night.

The Brazilian started Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Burnley, but he was almost ineffective as Spurs struggled to break down their stubborn opponents.

The Brazilian usually helps the team with his direct running, but in that game, he had no chance to enjoy that much space.

When he was replaced by Erik Lamela in the second half, Spurs got better attacking Sean Dyche’s side.

They scored the winning goal with the Argentinean’s help and Football London’s Nestor Watach reckons that the days might be numbered for the former PSG man.

With Gareth Bale also now a member of the Tottenham squad, it’s just a matter of time before Moura has to deal with competing for space with Bale.

If he cannot win the battle with Lamela, then it suggests that he is in for a tough time.

On Moura’s performance, Watach said: “To put Moura’s contributions in context, his replacement Lamela, who played 25 minutes fewer, registered nine more touches, one more dribble, and one more shot, which was headed on target.

“It might be a wait yet for unused substitute Bale to start knocking on Mourinho’s door for a first Premier League start since 2013, but Moura did little to keep him out of the team, while Lamela underlined his own claim in a comparatively lively cameo.”

I thought Jose had Reggie on the bench as he might have found Burnley away a bit tough. Same with Moura, irrespective that he has been here a while. For me Jose chose the wrong horse. Lamela likes the battle, he stands up and wants to be counted, normally by fouling everyone in his path, but for me he was always a better option for Moura in this game.

I have been wondering where he will end up. Gone by next summer.

You are absolutely right in sprint tests his results were very good. I remember a comeback from injury where he got turned and recovered like a tanker.
I can’t work him out.

Never quite getting it right Davies either frustratingly under hits crosses or over hits them ending in no mans land!
Apart from that and the above he is ok!!!

Likeable lad he is and useful utility player I beg to differ over Davies. A tad harsh perhaps when by selecting a couple of dodgy moments in isolation:-
i) He made a sloppy pass which could have led to a goal
ii) Expecting a decent cross into the mixer from his freekick,
he ballooned the ball out.
iii) He makes too many square balls back with Doherty catching the same habit.
His duties are simple. Defend well and when attacking be productive!

First time in years that we can genuinely say that we now have a strong subs bench and with glowing praise about Jack Clarke it’s ticking over nicely!!

Really enjoying Pammys performances lately if he keeps injury free could be a real asset for us rather than in past seasons.

I remember reading somewhere not long ago that Jose would not play Toby & Dier together as he didn’t think either had pace,
then the next available game.

Dier does have pace, he just doesnt use it, a few seasons ago he did, from what I remember was one of the fastest in the squad, he more suffered sometimes in midfield with anticipating, which made him look slow, but to be honest he’s not been as bad as I thought in defence.

Just alittle side note,
but I remember reading an article somewhere not long ago where it was written that Jose would not play Toby & Dier together as he didn’t think either had pace,
…then the next available game ?
Away to Burnley, hmm!

Lamela has been very consistent of late and is definitely Jose’s kind of player. Very hard working, decent amount of skill, with a nasty streak. I would have started him over Lucas, but I am guessing, because of his lack of recent match fitness, Mourinho elected to start Lucas.

I like Moura, but he is inconsistent. Sometimes he looks like a world beater (see Ajax) and sometimes ineffectual (see Burnley). However, he is a great team guy and a valuable squad member, although I think sometimes he performs better when it’s not expected of him.

Agreed when despite any indifferent performances he is an integral part of squad rotation as required.

Moura always looks like a world beater against weak opponents, I’ll acknowledge he has the odd good game against a decent team but they are few and far between unfortunately.

Admittedly Moura had an off night but in fairness others were equally subdued by our opponents. On the plus side, good news for Jose is that competition for places paints a healthy picture!
