Tottenham fine covid rule-breakers but is that enough?

By Bruce Grove -

Sergio Reguilon, Erik Lamela and Giovani Lo Celso have been fined by Tottenham after they breached covid-19 rules on Christmas day.

The trio was pictured with West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini in a large group image, and they have since apologised.

The coronavirus is sweeping through the UK and has forced the country to shut down yet again, despite the vaccination push that is currently going on.

Football has seen a rise in covid cases recently and it could possibly see elite sport being suspended, which makes their act very irresponsible.

The Athletic claims that Spurs have fined the players and they have also been reminded of their responsibilities as top players.

However, the club hasn’t suspended them, meaning that Lamela and Reguilon could play in the game against Brentford this evening.

These players have to know that they are being looked at as role models by younger footballers and football fans around the world.

Countries have been struggling to get their citizens to obey lockdown rules, and that puts more responsibilities on the players to become better examples.

The FA will probably have to come down harder on players who break covid rules to serve as a deterrent to other players because it seems their teams will not do that.

A fine is good but is it really enough?

Can’t accept the role model argument. When I was a kid I admired Best and Greavsie as footballers, but I also knew about their off-field antics. Their behaviour off the pitch didn’t make me want to become a piss-head or a gambler. People, including young people and kids, are more complex than ‘monkey see, monkey do’. They make judgements for themselves, even at a young age.

They should absolutely pay for their transgressions. Enough of society holding althletes as their morale guidance and higher standards they do for Politicans, CEOs and Pastors. We quick to latch on to athletes rich and privilege, yet we forget they are young people prone to make bonehead decisions.
