Opinion: Danny Rose Quotes All Too Regrettably Emphasize A Core Issue At Spurs

By Joe Fish -

Danny Rose has told Standard Sport that he will run his contract down at Tottenham Hotspur and leave the club on a free transfer in 18 months.

In another honest and revealing interview, the England full-back admitted that he had been told he could leave Spurs in the summer, but claimed that there were no offers for him.

According to Sky Sports, Watford launched a transfer deadline-day bid to bring the 29-year-old to Vicarage Road.

Rose has insisted that the media would be wasting their time writing any more transfer speculation about him because he is ‘not going anywhere until his contract is finished’ in June 2021.

Standard Sport quotes him as saying: “It’s pretty obvious what happened [in the summer]. People upstairs at Tottenham were trying to do what they were trying to do. I’ve said [to them] I’ve got 18 months left on my contract and I’m not going anywhere until my contract has finished.

“In January, you’re probably going to hear something [about my future]. I’m telling you right now that I’m not going anywhere until my contract is finished.

“[Tottenham chairman] Daniel Levy told me in the summer there was no new contract for me at Tottenham, which is fine. I respect that. We move on.

“My contract is up in 18 months’ time and I’ll leave the football club then. People [in the media] can save their time trying to get stuff ready for January about me being sold.

“Because I can tell you now: it ain’t happening. I know what people were trying to do in the summer… There were no bids — that was rubbish.”

Rose has retained the support of Mauricio Pochettino who has handed the defender nine Premier League starts this season, compared to three for left-back rival Ben Davies who signed a new long-term contract in July.

“When the manager stops calling me into his office, stops giving me advice, that’s when I’ll think it’s time to leave Tottenham,” Rose told Standard Sport. “But until then, I’m not going anywhere.

“I’m lucky to have a manager at Tottenham who, from the first day we met, has always stuck by me, regardless of anything, regardless of the rubbish in the media about me being sold or not part of his plans — all that nonsense.”

What good is the chairman laying down threats if the manager isn’t going to back him up?

Levy and Pochettino not being on the same page is clearly where the summer squad rebuild failed and this is another example.

If players, such as Rose, or Toby Alderweireld or Serge Aurier, know that they are going to stay in Pochettino’s plans, what motivation do they have to leave?

They can enjoy the London lifestyle, pick up their big wages, and play at one of the best stadiums in Europe knowing their performances DO NOT MATTER.

Like it or not, Levy calls the shots at Spurs and unless Pochettino backs his stance on Rose, we will lose another senior player without making a penny.

Levy looks at balance sheets and projections. Signing players, giving new contracts is ONLY about that and nothing to do with football.

However, I believe Poch and Levy are on the same page in many respects but that Poch will also feel let down, this period is make or break for their relationship. We’ll just have to see how it all works out, not looking Gio right now though after another ‘Levy’ summer of dithering over pennies…

Are we really saying daniel levy is a better judge of a footballer than poch? Rose’s interview simply confirms what was already obvious: levy and his acolytes want Rose out because he did the unthinkable and questioned the quality of the players levy was providing poch when the club was challenging for the title. He dared to suggest “value signings” like Clinton and Georges-Kevin were not going to push the club over the line. He will never be forgiven for questioning the great man.
