Is Jose Planning To Move Eric Dier Back – Into Our Back 4?

Tottenham are apparently preparing to open contract talks with Eric Dier after deciding that the 26-year-old does have a future at the club.

Spurs had been tipped to sell Dier in the summer as he enters the last year of his contract, after a couple of poor seasons hit by illness and injury.

However, his reversion to centre-back just prior to the Covid-19 lockdown could have saved his Spurs career, as Football Insider understands that Jose Mourinho is happy to use Dier as one of his main defenders next term.

Football Insider’s report adds that Spurs weren’t comfortable with the finances of selling Dier, who wouldn’t have commanded a huge fee considering his form and contract situation, and yet would still have cost in excess of £30m to replace.

Dier is a good man to have around and I’d be happy to have him as part of the central defensive unit, in the knowledge that he can deputise in midfield emergencies.

We’d still need another defender though. Daniel Levy better not put a new suit on Dier and present him to Jose as his centre-back signing.

I can believe this as his transfer value has dropped substantially in the last couple of seasons along with his form. It makes sense to extend his contract, and hope his form recovers. I have never thought he was a good holding midfielder but he could be a decent central defender. I don’t believe the N’dombele swap stories, they never work, but although he has had a poor first season, I have always believed that it takes one season for a player from a country to acclimatise to the PL. I think he has the potential to be a world class player. There were commentators on this site who thought Lo Celso wasn’t good enough to have the purchase option exercised.
