Forget the big names, Tottenham are targeting three lower-profile signings this summer

By Bruce Grove -

There has been quite a bit of speculation about players supposedly wanted by Tottenham and some of them, like Philippe Coutinho, have been high profile individuals, however, according to Football London, Spurs have set their sights on three players specifically and none of them is what one would describe as high profile.

Jose Mourinho is looking to fill specific positions in his squad and not sign players for the sake of it, so forget about Gareth Bale, Coutinho, Ivan Perisic and so on, they are not the type of player that the Portuguese is after.

Tottenham need a versatile midfielder, a right-back and a backup striker to fill in glaring holes in the team.

Yes, they also need to upgrade some positions but the finances are not there right now to do that and therefore Mourinho is concentrating on the biggest weaknesses in the team.

The versatile midfielder that Spurs want is Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The right-back is Norwich City’s Max Aarons and the back-up striker is Bournemouth’s, Callum Wilson.

It is not going to be straightforward to land all three but it is rather obvious from the amount of media coverage that the three named players are the priority for Mourinho and Tottenham.

There will be many rumours over the next couple of months with some outrageous claims made but Hojbjerg, Aarons and Wilson are the most likely signings according to the majority of reports from both credible and not so credible outlets.

One thing is for sure, there will not be any mega big-name signings.

Wison started 35/38 games in 2019/20, 30/38 2018/19 & 28/38 in 2017/18 that’s an average of over 30 a season it looks like his bad injury is behind him.

Hoijberg could be the answer but Wilson I suspect is too injury prone.I would still go for a good young prospect from the Championship.

I will bow to your superior knowledge on Mr Hjobjerg and hope you are right but he is certainly no Moose in his dribbling ability and the only thing that I can see that they have in common is neither of them can shoot or score goals. I had the pleasure of watching Mackay at WHL and if he turns out to be half the player he was, I will be delighted.

Levy has never bought mega big name signings so no surprise there. We aren’t at that stage where we sign established stars, it’s always players who have yet to prove themselves. Or else we sign stars who are nearing the end of their careers like Van de Vaart and Edgar Davids.

You know your onions Marbs but just this once I will call you on Hojbjerg. I think he is the m/f general we need he is built like a brick Arsenalhouse and is never injured.Different players but think of Moose & Vic in their prime (what they did for the team rather than exact replicas). Personally reminds me of mini Mackay (but I admit I am as mad as a box of frogs)

Got to agree Aarons looked a bit out of his depth this season.

I had really wanted Ake but that ship has sailed. Brroks could be very good, and Sarr of Watford is another Mane in the making, although I know these are not positions of high importance. I am completely underwhelmed by Hojbjerg as are most Saints fans and Wilson is more injury prone than Kane. Patrik Shick would be the perfect back up to Kane for me.

Well the team will become what we buy, so if we buy average guess what? If ENIC want the CL money then they should invest for that. They can’t have it both ways. I’m not buying all this we’re completely skint PR either, it’s something they are using as an excuse. But even over the last 4 years when we’ve had CL money and before the virus they showed no ambition in their signings for the most part. Last season for example we faced Europe, the PL and the cups with just the one injury prone striker on our books. So what was the excuse back then?
It’s just the way they are, they want the fans to pay the highest prices but aren’t prepared to fulfil their side of the bargain.

I think Bruce is of yankee persuasion so could be forgiven at first for not recognising what an Express/ Daily Star ‘exclusive’ actually means.

CASTANGE japh toby and senchez can cover central and right side defence. so I’d buy castange and not bother with arons

I am totally underwhelmed by those choices. Would personally like to see David Brookes from Bournemouth and Castagne rather than Aarons! Anyway, knowing Spurs we may get only one out of those three!

I appreciate you’ve got a job to do Bruce, but you’re as guilty as anyone for giving credence to some of these outrageous and ridiculous rumours.
