Darren Bent makes starting case for one player ahead of Tottenham’s next match

By Bruce Grove -

Darren Bent has made a case for Steven Bergwijn to start Tottenham’s next game against Southampton.

The Dutch winger joined Spurs last winter, and he has been an integral part of Jose Mourinho’s squad since then.

He didn’t start Tottenham’s first league game of the season against Everton and was only introduced into the game in the second half.

He was in the team from the start against Lokomotiv Plovdiv, but he didn’t finish the game as he was subbed off after the 70th-minute mark.

Tottenham will be keen to earn their first league win of the season in the game against The Saints and Bent reckons that he would make a number of changes to the side that was beaten by Everton the last time out including starting Bergwijn.

Asked what changes he would make to the starting XI, Bent told Football Insider: “Unfortunately he can’t change the whole team, I’m sure he’s going to look to one or two positions.

“It’s difficult because you look around the squad and think where can they strengthen?

“I really liked Bergwijn when he burst on the scene but for whatever reason, I know he’s had a couple injuries here and there, but he’s never really been able to consistently play and nail down that right-sided slot.

“Kane and Son, they’re definites, when Bale eventually becomes a Spurs player and gets in the building, he’ll occupy that right side but they’re saying he’s not going to be ready for another four weeks. I like Bergwijn so I’d play him.”

Bergwijn has scored 3 times in 18 games for Spurs and he will be hoping to improve on that this season, especially with Gareth Bale now back at the club.
