What Jose Mourinho Is Looking For From A Right-Back Might Explain KWP Treatment

By Joe Fish -

“Strong and imposing” is what Jose Mourinho is looking for in a new Tottenham right-back according to Sky Sports.

The report from Lyall Thomas claims that Mourinho wants to sign a more defensive-minded player to dovetail with Serge Aurier.

This makes perfect sense to balance the defence and also gives the Portuguese the option of swapping around which flank has the inverted full-back and which has the roaming de-facto winger.

He has this choice on the left with Ben Davies and Ryan Sessegnon.

Mourinho’s criteria for his new right-back also explains why Kyle Walker-Peters was loaned out to Southampton without a sniff of making the problem position his own. The 22-year-old has some likeable qualities but at 5ft 7in (1.7 m), according to transfermarkt.com, he is neither strong nor imposing.

That being said, neither are many of the right-backs that have been linked to Spurs recently; Max Aarons, Youcef Atal, Achraf Hakimi et.al.

So it looks like it will be KWP out, but who is the right person to come in?

KWP needs to bulk up and get angrier. Evra at Utd was a full back who could play, yet defend. He wasn’t the biggest, but could put in a tackle. TAA at Liverpool puts his foot in when needed, as does Robertson. Soft full backs do not make it.

Wan-Bissaka would have been ideal, but we all know the reason he didn’t come.
