“We were terrible under Poch for his last 18 months” These fans react to potential Pochettino return

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham fans have reacted to news that their club is in talks to bring back Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs sacked him in 2019 after they had made a poor start to the 2019/2020 season and replaced him with Jose Mourinho.

The Argentinean had been complaining about not being backed in the transfer window and never got the support.

Spurs took a chance on Jose Mourinho and backed the Portuguese heavily at the start of this season.

Mourinho started the campaign well, but his team soon faltered and he lost his job just before the Carabao Cup final.

They are now looking for a replacement for the former Chelsea manager.

They have been linked with the likes of Brendan Rodgers and Roberto Martinez, but Sky Sports is reporting that they are considering a sensational return for Pochettino.

Not every fan of the club is excited about that development and they reacted as Sky Sports tweeted about the development.

The success of England and Belgium at the 2018 World Cup meant that I think 8 of our first team got a two week close season break before the new English season ridiculously early.
Combined with the blank transfer window this meant our first team squad played practically two seasons without a break so I don’t think it was that big a surprise our form tailed off towards the end of the season.
I agree investment is the biggest but not the only arbiter of likely success. Hence why Saturdays CL final is between two clubs backed by oil empires

Why would Conte accept a contract like that? He screwed Chelsea for his last years salary and Inter too so he seems quite switched on when it comes to monetary matters

The last 18 months of Poch was generally torturous… masked by a CL final appearance. Yes, Poch did mould what he had into a team that played attractive football but the selling of Walker, demise of Rose & loss of Dembele coupled with 1 or more of the big four being in transition meant we were able to punch above our weight. You dont need to be a rocket scientist to realise that eventually the big 4 will get their houses in order, and eventually without marked improvement in the players you buy or recruit you will eventually finish or perform relative to your annual budget when measured against your peers..which is approximately where we are now give or take 1-2 places.

Even without the investment we had a squad better than relegation form Premier League football.

We had 12 months of relegation standard football under Poch that LUCKILY didn’t fall within the same season – plus, the bloke threw in the towel BEFORE the biggest cup final Spurs had found themselves in for decades. He lost the plot.

In the doc he looked bitter and spent, he now is reinvigorated and loves Spurs, wants to kiss and cuddle all the old faces? Ridiculous idea all round.

I still maintain that had Levy not taken his eye off the ball with the unnecessary stadium build, and invested in the squad instead, along with paying our stars what they actually were worth, that “slump” could have been avoided and no parting of the ways would have resulted.
The team that Poch inherited was nothing special, he made it so. Yes he had Kane but there was far more to it than that. Under Mourinho we were a 1 man (Kane) team. Under Poch we were a whole entity that blew teams away with our combined style of football. Mourinho got given far more than Poch ever was, and could do nothing with it.
Poch has won a trophy in just a few months in France so has got that particular monkey off his back. He would win the French title next season for sure imo. This year it was just a fluke. Spurs need his footballing style back.

Totally agree. I also think the loss of Wanyama to injuries didn’t help either. He was a beast for us in the 2016/17 season.

LEVY LOOKS TO RINSE AND REPEAT ………………………………….

It is never a good idea to revisit a previous romance, especially when the parting was acrimonious. The prospect of Pooch and Levy retaking their vows to each other has disaster written deep all over it.

Reports stated a few days ago that ENIC was looking for a manager that was “softer” and “easier to manage”. The word patsy springs to mind and is there a better fit out there for that role than Pochettino. ENIC and Levy in particular are desperate for their own Great Reset. A reset to times before the stadium construction when Pochettino was managing to extract blood from a stone with a squad that had come together without a cohesive plan and had the great fortune to have amongst its midst a fledging world-class striker in Harry Kane driven by a burning ambition to become one of the best. Kanes exploits alongside a young squad who bought into the Pooch /ENIC different project narrative sustained themselves on the promise of jam tomorrow.

This young squad had the benefit of youthful expectation and energy to drive them towards CL qualification for several seasons and a CL Final with a huge dose of a charmed life en-route. I am not sure that Pooch or the squad truly believed they should be there and they performed like they had not shown up for the biggest match in the club’s history. As the final whistle blew you could sense the wind disappearing from the squad’s sales and Pochettino’s own realisation that once again he was the bridesmaid and not the bride. The stigma of serial losers began to associate itself with Pochettino and the players. In an attempt to deflect this spotlight of failure from shining too brightly on him, Pochettino spoke of the club needing to be brave, meaning to start investing in rebuilding the squad and that he was just a coach and ultimately it was not his responsibility for the lack of success.

Levy stepped in with a contract enhancement for Pochettino and suddenly once again Pochettino was happy with the squad again. However, the squad was far from a happy camp and the terminal decay had set in leading to a steep slide into midtable mediocrity and the sight of Mourinho and Levy showing signs of affection for each other. Pochettino found out that Levy and ENIC have short memories and sharp knives as they shovelled him out of Hotspur Way.

Since then Pochettino has gone on to prove he is still a serial loser by failing to secure the Lique 1 title in what is usually a one-horse race with PSG as the Man City equivalent. ENIC and Levy have succeeded in creating a generational debt legacy, and have dragged the club’s name through the mud with aborted furlough schemes and an ESL attempt to take the club effectively away from its legacy fans, plus another failed new manager appointment with Mourinho that has seen us slide like a counter on a snakes and ladder board to the ignominy of a European Conference league placing

Pochettino knows his jig is up next season at the latest as PSG will only accept success. ENIC and Levy are looking to sail the good ship THFC into calm and still waters as they look to re-establish the relationship with the fanbase to facilitate season ticket sales and to buy them time to start flooding the stadium with non-football related activities to raise revenues and service the weight of the loan debt slowly sinking that ship.

The prospect of Pochettino and Levy, therefore, coming together in a warm embrace may help them both feel warm and cosy but will it serve the aspirations of the long-suffering fans of this once great football club who have been systematically and deliberately denied any prospect of real and tangible success? I suspect that once again it will be jam tomorrow. It remains to be seen whether that will be enough to satisfy the wallets of the client reference numbers. It looks unlikely to satisfy Harry Kane’s ambition and desire for titles and trophies.

Gotta laugh, the absolute cheek of sky to make it sound like they have a new story, when it was actually broken 2-3 days before elsewhere, horrible arrogance.

Goodness me it’s not like anyone else decent wants to come to Spurs is it? Poch was proven, top 4, four seasons running on a notorious Levy transfer budget, serious challenge for the title, multiple domestic semi finals and CL final. But more important to me widely lauded around the world for playing the best football on the planet.
It was Levy and enic’s failure to financially build on this that was cause of Poch’s demise. This obsession with writing off an 18 months beset with financial failure during which we reached a CL final is utterly bizarre imo. He was screwed by enic that’s all.

So you think Levy would appoint somebody who would tell him to get lost?

Oh no not this hot potato again. That was an 18 months when we reached a CL final I would add, not that the average idiot Spurs fan on twatter would understand the significance of that, most of them post whilst playing on their nintendo’s at the same time, and are incapable of multi-tasking because of dividing the output from their solitary brain cells.
As has been said on here by people with commonsense, Poch was screwed over by the arch villain Levy who went 2 whole transfers windows without bringing in a player for a manager whose tactic of the high press requires a very fit, big squad. So no reinforcements for a year, the only club in history to suffer that in England.
Add to that dishonour the fact the enic scrimped and saved on players wages too, causing alienation with the likes of Eriksen and Toby, causing their performance levels to drop significantly. In the case of Eriksen who was world class it was little short of criminal what he was paid compared to Master saboteur of Teams Levy himself.
Things got so bad re. the lack of support of Poch that Walker realised Levy was a time waster and jumped ship to get success. Levy being the prime imbecile he is thought he could sack Poch, blame the manager for his own failures (for which Levy is a serial offender – now found out), then appoint Mourinho and prove to everyone how clever he is. However the little twerp couldn’t bring himself to support Mourinho either!
These so called Spurs fans (now probably back in school) need to look at this in the wider context of Levy’s history with mostly sound managers.
Having been categorically proven wrong with Poch, let Levy eat humble pie. It may actually change the stupidity level of Levy and make him treat Poch better this time around. Provide him with maximum possible funds to slowly rebuild to the levels of the high years which were the majority of his managership despite lack of investment, a time in which Poch proved himself as a world class manager. If anyone can sort Spurs out right now it’s Poch. He’s magic you know…

Imagine he starts off badly, which he very well might…how much patience could you have considering the failure of his last 18 months at the club?

Would be a nonsensical appointment.

If we are all honest, we know the last 12-18 months of Poch’s previous tenure at spurs was pretty terrible (Champions League run excluded, although that involved a hell of a lot of luck and papered over the cracks of abysmal league form).
The only thing I would say that this time coincided with a sustained period of Poch being linked with various other high profile jobs (United and Real Madrid) and so his personal focus was definitely not there. This must have rubbed off onto the squad, if a manager isn’t committed, are you really that bothered to run yourslef into the ground for him?
In addition to this there was a complete lack of investment in the squad, the Moussa Dembele shaped hole in the squad was never filled and he as a player was so sorely missed in terms of making the team tick.
Added to that attitudes of players such as Eriksen who wanted out surely would not have helped the atmosphere in a squad that had been previously so closely knit.

Personally I don’t think the Poch rumours are anything more than that, but if he did return then I can only hope that he would return focused with a point to prove. Equally, there has got to be financial backing and a serious culling of unwanted players – this is where I feel it will all fall down.

What the hell is going on at Spurs? I think that Levy is really struggling. There may well be truth in Levy talking to Poch but it’s probably because they still have some kind of “relationship” and DL wanted to sound him out. It’s nearly 6 weeks since we sacked Jose and our chairman is going back, cap in hand to a manager he sacked 18 months ago. Was there really nobody else in the frame? Did they all turn him down? I know you should never be surprised by anything in football but does anyone else feel DL has finally lost the plot?
I’ve always made my views on Levy clear. I think he should either step up or step down and appoint someone to run the footballing side of the club and not interfere. However, after the last few weeks I think there is genuine grounds for his dismissal from the club all together.

Look poch worked well with a mixed squad first time around. Not a terrible squad he had Jan and Toby and walker and Rose, eriksen moura son and kane but a lot of crap who are still there. This squad needs sorting and poch is a yes man he never got the backing first time around and will not get it this time. For me its conte. He will get rid of the dead wood which sadly will include kane because he wants success and it would take at least two yrs under conte. I would give conte a 4yr contract with a option for both parties to walk away at the two Yr point. Poch will not keep kane because poch is another 5 Yr of levy investing little and winning nothing.

Here we go again how many times no no no. This squad needs a massive clearing out and poch won’t do that he will do what levy tells him without question. Thats what happened first time around until he got fed up and gave up. Not coming back thank goodness wrong manager this time around

The negativity from a certain sections of fans, I’d like to know, who would your top choice be for the role? There’s no one out there that seems to be would be a better fit than Poch (and I’m not saying that because of style of play).

Ten Hag has never managed outside holland and would be very risky, Potter has never managed a top team, Don’t even get me started on Roberto Martinez, Conte would never work. Allegri, even if he were available before would be very risky, Zidane has never managed medicore players or in a competitive league, Rangnick would probably be comparable to Poch but with better recruitment (we should probably try to get him into the club).

To me there doesn’t seem to be any available manager that would actually be a better than Poch. And don’t give me that ‘he was sacked by spurs under two years ago, Daniel Levy made a terrible decesion’ to allow bad past decisions to govern future decisions is a fallacy, either Poch is a good option or he isn’t, and that is independent of whether or not levy made a bad decision sacking him.

It looks like Botch returning would be Levys easiest way out of this Fiasco, would give him more breathing space.

him coming back wouldn’t be a complete story unless you also, back him with funds and sell deadwood essentially what they should of done 2 and a half odd years ago and even then it may not be a good idea

I’d be excited if Levy said he was leaving football to people who know something about it and is going to invest in transfers and wages.

Poch coming back, uninterested.
