Tottenham wage bill shows remarkable job that Mauricio Pochettino did

By Bruce Grove -

Mauricio Pochettino is one of the best managers that Tottenham has ever had, I know that statement is very debatable considering that he didn’t win any trophies for the club.

Some have even said that he is overrated because of a lack of silverware on his CV as a manager.

The Argentinean, however, made a huge impact at Spurs, which ended in him taking the club to the final of the Champions League last year.

Even more impressive is that he achieved much of his success with players who were on low salaries.

Tottenham reached the final of the Champions League and constantly competed in the Champions League despite having an average wage that is less than that of Arsenal and even Everton.

Football London has recently revealed the average annual wages at all the top European teams and Tottenham weren’t in the top ten, despite reaching the Champions League final last year.

The Lilywhites weren’t even in the top six of England’s top wage payers and this shows how more impressive Pochettino was with the club, something Jose Mourinho might struggle with.

Manchester City was top among English teams as they pay $9.15m per player annually on average.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton all come in ahead of Spurs who spent just $5.18m per annum on their players.

In my opinion, this shows how remarkable a job Pochettino did in comparison to the other top six clubs. I doubt they would have achieved as much if they had such a limited wage budget.

There is the financial benefit of bonus’s attached to winning competitions. It was put out there some time back when the salary issue was brought up. There’s no guarantee that high salaries equals winning comp’s. What did Everton achieve paying on average higher than Spurs, or Arsenal aside from the FA cup, no CL for how many seasons, lowest position since..? The high salary reward tends to work for the clubs who have the most money to buy the best as well as pay the best players.

Levy should have let him rebuild and back him but he hoped sacking Poch and bringing in Jose would speed up the reinvigoration of the squad. It clearly hasn’t worked this season to the point where top 4 was achieved so now we are into a situation that may have been the same had Poch stayed anyway.

I just don’t see the sacking of Poch and hiring someone like Jose as anything other than trying to kick the can containing the real issues of Levy’s regime down the road. Mend and make do, that’s all it is. PEH might be a decent character and might work well under Jose but this just isn’t the level of player we need to compete at the top level.

I guess it’s hard to tell because of the budget restrictions he was working under. I just don’t understand the idea that he wasn’t capable of winning anything because as you rightly point out, Levy will have wanted the cache of the Champions League for the stadium branding and all the focus was on that.

Besides, had Poch won the League Cup do we honestly think that would have enhanced his reputation more than getting to a Champions League final on the budget he was working with? It’s a trophy but it’s not as big an achievement so where does the logic about winning something, just anything come from? Idiots, in my opinion…

It’s actually reached desperation a point that during my lifetime I was elated being at WHL to see us beat Torino to win the Anglo Italian Cup which I counted as proper silverware and those old enough like myself seeing us win the 5 A side tournament at Wembley on Sportsnight!!

A League Cup, FA Cup or Ropey Cup but PL title unlikely especially should King Kane depart then it’s all downhill!!

So far he’s been a world class coach, but just an average manager…. He needs to go to a top club now and prove himself..

Poch is one of the best coachs in the world… Managerial decisions have unfortunately tainted his manager rep. Though I suspect he put it to Levy, and then Levy ordered him to focus on top four…. Money.

I hope we win the League under Jose. Will I be happy with the Ropey or the League Cup? Depends where we finish in the league and what comes after. If the football is defensive and boring then we are gonna have to win a lot of s**t for me to be happy with Jose.

We are a club with an identity and a tradition in the way we play, if you’re going to tear that up then you’d better have a very good reason to justify it…

Levy sucked the life out of everything and everyone. Nobody had any more to give, meanwhile he gets on The Times Rich List for the first time!

As players you know full well what other clubs are paying. It’s demotivating, especially when you get to European finals…

Don’t remind me, when we used to be kings of winning the FA Cup which has quickly passed us by!
It’s damning stats that our last trophy won was 2008.
Last league title: 1961!

I see the Villa board having slapped an £80m price tag on Grealish are holding crunch talks with the player when he returns from hols. His likely destination Man Utd.
And just to think we could have bought Grealish a couple of years ago for half this figure but badly messed up. Ouch!

True, the pinnacle being that amazing CL semi final win against Ajax was unbelievable. For what Poch had accomplished no one would have begrudged us winning the CL final or the PL title in 2016 probably extinguishing our title dreams for ever under the current regime me thinks.

Until Poch brought stability to the club Levy had sacked 10 managers in 13 years some of whom were truly awful. Not a pretty sight, A dismal figure. Christan Gross did not last long. Fondly recalling Jacq Santini who promised to make Spurs play like France but ended up with France playing like Spurs! The cruel brutal sacking of Martin Jol leaves a bitter taste.

SHOULD but sadly failed. Having worked wonders during his tenure coming close to winning this and nearly winning that we won nought! Ultimately no blame attributed to Poch other than having taken the club as far he could his fate was sealed after the CL final defeat when crestfallen he ought to have quit then instead of being predictably axed in the process.

I think that’s exactly what happened this last season, it certainly looked like most if them didn’t give a rats at the beginning. Even the Manager till he was sacked, at least it wasn’t at half time.

Maybe if players don’t feel that they are being rewarded for bringing success to a club in the same way as other teams they don’t give their all.

100%. Poch “failed” because Levy didn’t back him.
Outrageous anyone holds a grudge against him. You can like poch and hope Mourinho succeeds at same time
