Tottenham to sign new top-class players from new funding

By Bruce Grove -

Noel Whelan believes Tottenham will sign several top-class players this summer as they close in on a new naming rights deal for their stadium.

The Lilywhites are looking for an extra source of income this season after the coronavirus pandemic affected several of their revenue streams.

One way they can achieve that is to sell the naming rights to their new stadium like most clubs around Europe have already done.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this month that Daniel Levy is in talks to help Tottenham get a naming right sponsor for their stadium ahead of the new season.

It remains unclear how much the new sponsors will pay them, but Football Insider had reported earlier in the year that Tottenham wants around £25million-a-year for 20 years.

If they succeed in landing such a deal, it would help them secure an important guaranteed revenue stream for years and Whelan believes such a deal will also help them make some top quality signings.

Whelan told Football Insider: “You’ve seen Bayern Munich do it. You’ve seen big teams do it where they bring in financial capabilities from naming the stadium.

“It makes sense, it makes financial sense to do that. It’s not White Hart Lane anymore, it’s in the middle of London. It doesn’t really make any difference.

“You’ve gone from that hallowed ground where White Hart Lane was, very much like Arsenal did at Highbury.

“It does not matter what the stadium is called. It’s not White Hart Lane, which will live on in the memories of every Tottenham fan.

“This is a way now to bring in financial clout that can help you take that next step with players. To put these top-class players on the surface of a great stadium.

“That is the main aim right now. Recoup the money, be more challenging when it comes to transfers, get multiple new players in by the end of next month – which I expect to happen – that are going to grace that fantastic stadium they have.

“I don’t give a damn what you call the stadium, it’s not White Hart Lane. If they’re going to give them money to name it something else, the Cadbury’s Stadium, we don’t care.”

I don’t hate Levy, hate infers a blind rage, I just believe he’s made a complete mess of things.

As for the rest of your post, we’ve heard it all before, and it doesn’t stand up to any scrutiny.

We owe well over a billion, and you’re waffling about the NYSE.

No thanks.

Why would you keep cash in the bank at the rates we get. Every deal is leveraged and every deal makes more deals happen that is business.

I agree the naming rights didn’t go right at the start. Think it’s quite common knowledge that Levy pissed off a few punters with his meddling. However the last few seasons you can hardly blame him for a Pandemic! I wouldn’t sign a deal under duress of the climate either so I actually think he’s done a pretty good job to hold out. I don’t think this Pandemic is over by a long way as we will be locked down again no doubt but I definitely think money is starting to flow again and The big US funds are spending. Tie the naming with the NFL and Prem and it becomes and exciting proposal.

Unfortunately businesses leverage their capital and their contracts that’s the way business is run. Considering we don’t have some Oligarch or Sand bank then this is the best way to maximise your returns and compete.

If we list on the NYSE we become a very attractive proposal with all of the income streams (we will definitely be very leveraged then no doubt) it’s not ideal but you can’t win without investment, you can’t invest when your owners don’t want to compete……we seem to have done pretty well in the last 5 years and made money which is a bit of a minor miracle.

I know you hate Levy but we aren’t competing in a fair market

I don’t think anyone is disputing the usefulness of the money, but it hasn’t happened yet, and they’ve been looking for 4 years.

Should it happen, that money will go straight into the debt.

Remind us why you were so excited again?

True but twenty million a year is not going to solve our problems and there is no guarantee that any of the money makes it’s way to transfers. Twenty million is not going very far when United can drop £70 million on Sancho.

Under Enic/Levy when Tottenham signed top class player or players and what did they achieve or win? may be you know something I don’t know, I’m discovering new history I didn’t know about my club surprisingly everyday.

Sorry to piss on your comments sections parade but if you know anything about leases and naming rights deals, if you get a triple A sponsor it’s as good as cash. You can leverage that no probs and as good as cash in the accounts tomorrow.

Sorry but 20-25m per year for 20 years is big money. Pays off some debts and then the revenue (if we ever open up) from the stadium becomes profit which again can be leveraged also.

I personally think if we manage to get a Triple A sponsor we will list. Probably on the NYSE as the income and growth potential from all the revenue streams is massive and some big funds will love it. An IPO would be huge!

if you believe that most transfer fees are payed over time, then why wouldn’t £20kk/year make a difference exactly?

Even if we do get a sponsor it’s unlikely all the money would be up front and even if it was 20M per annum that’s hardly going to make a dent in the transfer market.

I’ve been saying the same as Lilywhite below that we will probably start the season with the same squad so Nuno had better make his magic work otherwise we are in serious trouble.

Besides why would you believe someone like Noel Whelan?Does he have the inside story on our transfer plans? I doubt it.And how much of the sponsorship money would go towards players anyway?

I agree, these posts of transfer rumours are no better than the click bait stuff on newsnow and strike a big contrast to what H puts out. In fact H makes reference to the silly rumours only for Bruce to then post up a newsnow type story about a Carlos kick a ball 5 mins later ! Well I suppose at least it eliminates newsnow

I doubt anyone pays over £400 million upfront. So twenty million a year is not going to make much difference.

I would be very surprised if any of that money settles anywhere near player transfer budgets
