Tottenham need bitter rivals to do them a favour to qualify for Europa League

By Bruce Grove -

As Tottenham enter the final week of the Premier League season they still have hopes of ending this season in a Europa League place.

To their credit, the Lilywhites have done their part so far with four wins from their last five games ahead of the last game of the season against Crystal Palace.

But because of their inconsistent season, they will still need some help to clinch a Europa League spot, and Chelsea is the team in the best position to help them out.

The top seven teams on the Premier League table at the end of each season qualify for either the Champions League or the Europa League if the winners of the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup are among them.

This season’s FA Cup final features an Arsenal team that might not end this season in a top-seven position, winning the FA Cup will guarantee them a spot in the Europa League and limit the number of European qualifiers through the league standings to the top six.

Spurs are currently 7th on the league table. They will need Chelsea to beat Wolves on the final day of the season or for the Blues to at least draw that fixture while Spurs must beat Crystal Palace to enter the top six.

If Chelsea cannot help them that way, the Blues will have to beat Arsenal in the FA Cup final to open up a European chance for the 7th position on the league table, which Spurs currently occupy.

If Chelsea loses to both Wolves and Arsenal then all that Tottenham have left, providing they beat Palace, of course, is if Wolves win the Europa League or Man Utd win it and finish outside top four.

Basically, to be certain of Europa League participation being confirmed in the next ten days Tottenham must beat the Eagles and hope that Chelsea does not lose to Wolves or they beat Arsenal in the FA Cup final.

Let’s hope Chelsea do the right thing here.

Of course we can afford one it’s a question of whether Levy will spend what’s necessary.Anyway Fergeson was a free, isn’t that what we are reduced to now.

Off piste,I see Palace just signed Fergeson from WBA on a free.I suppose our chief scout never saw that opportunity. But then perhaps we don’t need a RB.
