Tottenham linked with a move for Southampton midfielder – not impressed

By Bruce Grove -

With so much uncertainty and no football to report on, it is no surprise that the media are linking Tottenham with all manner of players and one of those is Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

It seems to me that what the press is doing is putting two and two together and coming up with five, Basically, they are scurrying around to link the Tanguy Ndombele wanted by Barcelona rumours to Spurs needing a replacement and up they come with Højbjerg

Opinions are clearly split on the Dane, some Spurs fans I have spoken with have a high opinion of the 24-year-old. I am afraid I do not.

I always find it a bit of a give away when none of the other elite clubs, English or European, do not show the same interest that Tottenham is apparently showing.

The Højbjerg I have seen has not impressed me that much, I am not saying that he is not a decent player but I am saying that he is not the sort of player that will help drive Tottenham on. He is just below the quality I feel the club should be targetting.

I understand that finances will be hit and that Daniel Levy will be looking for bargains but Højbjerg? Surely there is better quality available in this current climate.

Then there is the Ndombele situation. Would Levy really sanction his sale so early into his time at Tottenham knowing that there is very little chance of recouping what was laid out last summer?

I am not convinced that Højbjerg would be an upgrade on Ndombele and yes I know he has had a stinker of a first season but there is still a good chance he will come good next season once he gets his fitness up to scratch and finally adapts to the intensity of the Premier League.

Spurs need more dynamic signings that have the ability to help us move on to the next level, I simply do not see Højbjerg as that sort of signing and I certainly do not see him as an adequate alternative to Ndombele.

For a job like that we Redknapp the wheeler dealer back! He’ll get the gang together again (Niko, Crouchie, Defoe) and we’ll have Godin, Willian. It’ll be an army, granted Dad’s Army, but an army nonetheless.

I agree,he wouldn’t be a replacement for N’Dombele, who is better playing further forward.Or would be if we could get a tune out of him.
With apparently no money available Mourinho’s only option in the next window is going to be older,PL experienced free transfers. That will get him one chance to change the current trajectory of the club and perhaps win a minor cup.
