Tottenham gift new shirts to Marine players after covid prevented shirt swaps

By Bruce Grove -

Marine played perhaps their biggest ever competitive opponents when Tottenham beat them 5-0 in the FA Cup yesterday.

The 8th tier English side had seen their plans for the game disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, which meant that they would lose some revenue from fans being banned from coming to the stadium.

Tottenham helped them to sell some 20,000 virtual tickets for the game, which went a long way to help their finances.

They knew they almost stood no chance to win the game or to get anything from the fixture, and true to that, Spurs beat them 5-0 to reach the next round.

As customary, players swap shirts after every game, but the coronavirus pandemic forced the FA to ban shirt swaps for the competition this season.

Spurs came prepared to still help the Marine player get their hands on some souvenirs so that they will remember this day for a long time.

The club took to their social media handle to reveal that because the players cannot swap the shirts that they played the game with, they brought fresh shirts for the Marine players.

That was a classy gesture from the club and in fact, Tottenham and their fans have been brilliant throughout this whole period, and I am positive that Marine and their fan base will forever be grateful and cherish the memory for years to come, despite the result.

They sold over 30,000 virtual tickets at £10, made a lot more than the 3,000 crowd would have paid if fans were allowed.

The club is sending them the actual Tottenham jerseys after they have been washed. All in all, I know Harry has been a bit sniffy about the whole thing, but it was a brilliant public relations exercise by Spurs and Mourinho.

The papers and TV and Marine Fc are falling over themselves to congratulate Spurs and their fans on how they handled things.
