Tottenham could have as much as £175 million to spend on new players

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham is in a mess financially, they are not the only club of course but they are one of the worst-hit clubs in this pandemic and their financial issues are compounded by the fact that the squad is in desperate need of an overhaul.

Now, we know that Joe Lewis, the biggest shareholder of ENIC is not going to put his hand in his pocket and gift the club a few hundred million, we also know that the owners are hell-bent on the club being self-sufficient.

That is all fine and dandy as long as there is money to be invested in players by whatever means necessary.

In the absence of the owners putting money in then the only way the club can have any sort of transfer kitty is if they sell players.

I have put together a list of players that seem to be the ones that are generally referred to as deadwood, that is not to say that I agree that all these players should be sold but judging by comments on here and on social media, these ten players do appear to be the ones where no tears would be shed if they are jettisoned.

Hugo Lloris €9.00m
Davinson Sanchez €35.00m
Eric Dier €25.00m
Ben Davies €16.00m
Serge Aurier €20.00m
Matt Doherty €18.00m
Harry Winks €22.00m
Moussa Sissoko €13.00m
Dele Alli €32.00m
Erik Lamela €16.00m

Total €206m converted to £175m
All transfer valuations courtesy of TransferMarkt

Of course, it is unlikely that ten players will be sold in one window, they have to be replaced after all, though I am sure Oliver Skipp, Juan Foyth and Ryan Sessegnon could easily come in as ready-made replacements for at least three of the players on that list.

The point is that Tottenham could raise as much as £175m that could be reinvested in the squad and that is enough money to bring in 4-5 quality players that could do a job for Jose Mourinho, especially if they are his signings.

Things are not great right now financially but that does not mean that a squad overhaul cannot be done in the summer, as long as the will is there.

Do you know how close Barca are to bankruptcy? Real aren’t far off either. These are globally popular teams who rely on tourist revenue that they haven’t had for over 12 months.

When have you seen Bayern spend big in the last few years? They openly say every year they cannot compete with other european clubs. It is why they do their business outside of the transfer window (less competition), Upamecano would have caused a bidding war had Bayern gone in for him at the end of the season, but they were smart and sorted all of the formalities out during the season, he’s set to be registered on July 1st.

Which cases? All those fees have been taken off transfermarket.com, which researchers of economic performance have proved is ‘largely accurate’…

I see. Apologies, I didn’t read it properly.. He is one of the many who need to go, though probably not top priority.. So many players need to be replaced.. Of course you don’t leave gaping holes… Trading, selling deadwood and buying new is exactly what we need to do… We don’t keep Dele Winks and Sissoko, they go and we buy new with the money.. One or two decent players for those three, transfers plus their wages. Recall Skippy if we need another. We have Pierre and Tanguy and also Coco there.. I would also sell Coco and Tanguy if the right offers came.. I would sell half or more of the squad so it would be a case of doing as many of the best deals possible…. We don’t have a small squad anymore. The problem now is lack of quality.. Our second string, b team, backup boys are not good enough. We don’t have strength in depth.. As Zagreb proved.

PSG is the only top team I see that definitely wouldn’t want Kane or Son… With Mbappe up top and Neymar on the left wing they don’t need strengthening there.

You’re right about the Scouse, they run more like us.. But there will be no shortage of top clubs queuing up for both of them. The City saga proved there was no financial fair play. City and United could buy. Abromovich will also spend when he wants, he always has. Everton would also be sniffing, their owners have wedge.. Top teams across Europe will still buy top players. What exactly do you think is happening here? Madrid Barca Bayern etc are all suddenly not buying top players anymore? That they couldn’t afford Kane or Son?

In some cases considerably less.

I didn’t say that I thought he had. But Levy will believe that he has successfully made a step up in terms of league (Eredivisie to the PL) so won’t believe he is worth considerably less than we paid.

Well said Bruce.. This is exactly what is needed whether in one or two or even four windows. We are in full transition now.. The lads that let us down in Zagreb were all Botch trustees, Dele, Winks, Davies plus more have to go.. Our second string has proved they are not good enough.. No excuses from muppets.. We need a complete overhaul of this soft wimpy squad

Nobody has money to burn. Citeh the only ones who could get maybe one of them.

Chelsea cannot spend like they did last year.

PSG want Messi and they have the issues with Neymar and Mbappe’s contracts (easy to say “let one of them go” but again….we’ve established City are the only ones who could afford them)

Liverpool’s owners and Klopp have said they cannot afford to spend the kind of sums they did when Van Dijk signed, especially if they miss out on CL.

Can’t see Levy selling any of those for the proposed values. And I can’t see many clubs being interested.

Sanchez cost us £40m so there is no way on this planet that Levy takes £10m less, he will argue that Sanchez has flourished in a more competitive league and by that token the boy is worth £50m.

Dier can only command £25m because he is homegrown, if he was Italian we would be lucky if someone paid £10m.

Unless Wolves are stupid we won’t get what we paid for Doherty.

Regardless of all of the above, there is no chance that even half of these players will move on. And if they did, who are you replacing them with? We don’t exactly have a massive squad, so getting rid of Davies (for example) means we have to go out and buy a back up LB.

Ridiculous suggesting we get £175m in players sales to spend on key positions we already need….you’re only moving the problem. Gaping hole in CM if Sissoko, Alli and Winks go.

My worry is sanchez will be sold due to him being still young enough to increase in value by the buying club and Eric dier will be kept even though dier is not good or classed as homegrown. Also Toby would go due to age. I can’t see us loosing three centre half in one window.

So if the “Kane and Son camps” don’t give it long and decide in late July that it isn’t worth them sticking it out, who do you propose is going to pay the astronomical fee that both will require for Levy to sell?

I can see maybe one leaving but not both and even then I genuinely cannot think of a club that is in a financial position to buy either of them.

It’s good for us, but I think Harry will look back on last summer with a bit of regret.

Foyth will stay at Villarreal, Played very well for them and its only a £13m option to buy. They’d be mad not to.

The sort of business we need to do is a long term project due to the current financial constraints and of course Levy’s intransigence.

He is extremely unlikely to want to change his MO so Mourinho has to convince him to change and Levy changes the habits of a lifetime and that’s not going to happen. So it looks like same old same old for THFC.

As you say how this pans out will be watched keenly by the Kane and Son camps and they won’t give it long.

You are right, the change in FFP rules will make it easier for the wealthy clubs to do what they always do and that is hoover up all the best players.Maybe yjis is another push towards a super league.

You’re making the assumption that all players will be moved on together, which is never going to happen. Also i would suggest same of those fees are unachievable as everyone will know we are desparate to offload these players even if a few are homegrown.

Also you’re talking about all that money being reinvested in the squad.I don’t think so.

Levy could be hoisted by his own petard.

Can’t see any club paying those prices so 175M is way above the mark.
If we got 80M we’d be lucky!

I’ve advocated an overhaul too, but it has to be gradual, with some players that absolutely have to go ASAP (Dier, Dele, Winks, Sissoko, possibly Lloris, as he’s 34, Bale back to RM) and some that will have to be replaced soon, but maybe not this summer (Lamela, Davies, unfortunately also Toby, and one of Doherty and Aurier).

I am in two minds about the right backs – Serge is inconsistent and Doherty seems extremely unsuited to the RB position the way we play. Maybe if Jose wheeled out a 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2, whatever, with Reguilon and Doherty at the flanks? However, Doherty hasn’t impressed much going forward either… With any luck, Tanganga will be fit to play there regularly and one of the other two (hopefully Aurier) will be there to compete with him.

Raising c. 85 million pounds by selling those I suggested could let us get some very decent players – a GK (Pope, 30M), a CM (I still want Sabitzer, 36M) and maybe a CB to bolster the squad (if we throw a bit on top of the 19M that would remain). Not a large outlay, but doable.

However, I suppose “fans can’t imagine how difficult is to complete a transfer”. It is, if you overprice any sales and lowball every purchase.

This summer will show us – and maybe more importantly Son and Kane – what our aspirations are. If we are proactive, we can create a very competitive squad and lift a lot of the doom and gloom over the current state of things. If we wait until PEH dies of old age to shift out the wasters, we’ll lose Son and Kane and can look forward to midtable under a new guy.

I wouldn’t call Hugo dead wood and I wouldn’t get my hopes up about a major fire sale.

I’d guess at least half of those players will be here next season.

As for Foyth, Sessegnon and Skipp, bench players in the short term, with first team attainable for Sessy and Skippy.

Spurs are also not going to be helped by UEFA abandoning FFP because of the dire finances of most clubs. Closing the gap on the Oil and Gas companies with our new stadium income just got a lot harder.
