Tottenham coach gets ban and fine after Newcastle match protest

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham Goalkeeper coach, Nuno Santos has been banned for one game and fined for his protest at the end of Tottenham’s frustrating 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at the weekend.

Spurs were on course for victory when Newcastle was awarded a late penalty for a controversial handball committed by Eric Dier.

Callum Wilson converted the spot-kick to share the spoils for his new team.

It was a frustrating end to a game that Newcastle had barely threatened the Tottenham goal.

After the match, Santos along with several players surrounded referee Peter Bankes and he protested in an over the top manner and that prompted Bankes to issue him a red card.

He was charged and accepted the decision. He will now miss a game and he has also been fined £8,000.

“Tottenham Hotspur FC’s goalkeeper coach, Nuno Santos, has been suspended from the touchline for one match and fined £8,000 after admitting a charge for a breach of FA Rule E3 and accepting a standard penalty,” read an FA statement via Sky Sports.

“At full time of the Premier League fixture against Newcastle United FC on Sunday he used abusive and/or insulting language towards a match official on the field of play and/or his behaviour amounted to improper conduct. “

That draw means Spurs have won just one of their Premier League games so far and it increases the pressure on Jose Mourinho who needs to take the team into the top four this season.
