Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has admitted that he had to rein in his celebrations after reaching the Champions League final out of respect for his former club Ajax.
It was a year ago today that Lucas Moura’s hat-trick, including 96th-minute winner, saw us complete an incredible semi-final comeback in Amsterdam, sparking mass celebrations at full time.
Alderweireld has recalled how he conciously held in some of his own jubilation because of sympathy he was feeling for players and fans of the club that kickstarted his career.
The Belgian consoled former Southampton colleague Dusan Tadic as his Spurs teammates piled on each other. Tadic returned the favour by telling B92 that we were rubbish in the final and Ajax would have beat Liverpool.
You can’t buy class, eh?
