THE STORY OF AJAX V SPURS

By The Boy -

Former Spurs manager Martin Jol, BT Sport commentator Darren Fletcher and BBC radio DJ and Spurs fan Nihal Arthanayake dialled in to share their memories of that famous night in Amsterdam one year on.

Always great to see Martin Jol, although it’s beyond me why people have become so conditioned by failure that a game that is historically meaningless gets cooed over.

I’m more interested in why Pochettino played the wrong striker against Liverpool, and how our overall performance in the final was so utterly unmemorable.

We rode our luck once too often, our lack of quality and lack of alternative players on the bench was exposed. In hindsight we can see the rot had really set in, the team was burnt out, we all know the reasons why. I understand why Poch played Kane, though I did not agree with him. He played him because he is the iconic Spurs player of his generation, the sight of Harry on the pitch inspires the team and players. I don’t think he really believed in Lucas Moura as a player and looking to the future he needed Kane more than Lucas. He didn’t want to damage the relationship with his most important player. And maybe deep down in his soul he believed in a fairytale ending where Harry after such a long lay off returned to win the game. In the end Liverpool were a better team and had learned from the loss in the final the year before.
