There is just one question to be asked following Tottenham loss to Man Utd

By Bruce Grove -

It really was not a big surprise Spurs losing to Manchester United this afternoon at the Tottenham stadium and neither was the manner of the loss.

Spurs took the lead, as they have done quite often this season and as per usual, they were unable to hold on to that lead.

Champions League football is now over with, maybe not mathematically, but most level headed fans know deep down, it is gone.

That means that all the club has left to aim for this season is the Carabao Cup.

The question that has to be asked now, is that going to be enough to keep Jose Mourinho in his job.

It is not just the money the club is set to miss out on but the very real possibility now that Harry Kane will leave.

Daniel Levy is not the sentimental type and neither is he patient and even with the huge financial penalty that sacking Mourinho brings, Levy will probably not hesitate to pull the trigger if he feels that Mourinho cannot take the club forward.

This is not a Mourinho out article, that is for a different day, this is simply the question that has to be asked.

Is winning the Carabao Cup going to be enough to save Mourinho?

No,agreed, I can’t see us returning to the Champions League for some years. For what it’s worth, I think we may sneak the Carabao Cup, however, but then it’ll be another six years or more before we lift another trophy… unless you’re counting the newly proposed THIRD tier Euro trophy, presumably for teams in this country who finish no higher than 7th in the league (personally, I don’t really count the current Europa since the top FOUR placed teams are n’t in it…unless through failure in the CL, so I’m not going to be excited at the prospect of lifting the European Conference!)

Quite! Being one quarter Portuguese, I always feared it would be a historically trophyless Portugal national team that would get Jose when he was past his sell by date. Portugal managed a trophy breakthrough, though, and it’s been us that got the busted flush! (mind you Portugal may one day appoint him, to their disadvantage, too).

I agree with the sentiment just think it will be once we’ve lost the next 3 games. Benitez may get more out of this squad than Mourinho but whoever comes in will not be getting Spurs into CL football spots without major surgery to the sqaud. In the meanwhile all the other teams around us will strengthen their sqauds while we cant due to the toxic combination of covid & new stadium debt… Does Levy have a plan? 😏

I think the money earned from the potential Kane transfer should be used to provide a bonus for our hard working and underpaid chairman who has transformed the club into the colossus that it is today. Without his efforts who knows where we might be

Do you think that bizarre as it sounds that Mourinho is actually sabotaging spurs season. I’m looking at him at full time and he looks indifferent. How else can you explain playing dire and aurier. In What universe are they better than tanganga and alderweilde and why woukd you take off your two most creative players at 1 – 1 ? It’s like he’s manufacturing the sack and a payout

Ask yourself why we got Gedson and Vinny? And Matt Doherty. There is a common denominator – they are all represented by Jorge Mendes who by an amazing coincidence is Jose’s agent as well. Whose interest were these transfers made in? Mendes allegedly pocketed 6 million from the Doherty deal having represented all three parties.

I dont wholeheartedly blame Maureen, it’s the players at fault first and foremost.

ENIC out is the way forward. The problems existed in the Poch era and the (rotten) players eventually stopped playing for him too.

They are like kids who throw their toys out when they dont get their own way.

While Jose hasnt helped himself, he is good with a team of nobodies who are prepared to die for him.

These players wouldn’t (barring Kane, Son and Toby) die for anyone. These players are not winners and cannot be counted on which is what every manager needs.

Look @ Juve this season. They have some quality including Ronaldo and they are suffering.

The fans not being there has allowed the players to get away with murder. If they were there, they would not have had the performances that we have seen this season.

We need a nucleus of players that want to be part of something special.
Personally IMHO and no one has mentioned it so far, the role of football is at the end of an era.

Greedy players, greedy TV deals, Greedy regulations (FA, UEFA etc) and Greed across the board has killed the football we love.

Today with Son going down like he’d been shot and other games where players act like war victims puts a mockery on the fans that pay their wages.

We have 2 choices, with back ENIC out or the cycle will continue with the same old crap.

I for one will back ENIC out and will not be focused on Spurs anymore until they owners sell up.

No, it’s most definitely not enough for me. We have taken such massive backward steps under Jose , and these players do not believe in (or probably understand) his methods. Some say that Jose is yesterday’s man , I’d say that you could probably go back another 24 hours. We are now looking like we did in the dark days under Santini or Sherwood, negative and devoid of any ideas , just hoping to soak up pressure and score on the break. It is simply not working. He should’ve been gone after the Europa League defeat giving any new coach 3-4 weeks to imbed his own ideas. Now we’re stuck with Mourinho, we will not beat City and the season will just fizzle out. Levy made a bad bad decision with Jose, especially appointing him within hours of sacking the best coach we had for over 20 years, Poch.

When we didn’t strengthen the team for two transfer windows, despite Poch’s advice to the board to be brave, we have been going slowly downhill. We were the only top team in Europe not to strengthen for two windows, something that is unheard of in modern football and once you get behind the opposition, you are always playing catch up. The other problem is that any team rebuilding that takes place will involve a much higher and expensive refit. I see no light at the end of this particular tunnel whilst we have a chairman who is not only tone deaf but incompetent.

There seem to be some who point fingers everywhere else. Some valid.

Ultimately the manager is dreadful and is dragging us backwards.

This season has been the worst we have had for years, just feels really horrible. This is the Mourinho effect for you.

The Man U players were ecstatic when Mourinho was sacked, look at them now.

Unfortunately we will lose our best players, the rebound is going to be so much harder.

If Tottenham want a chance of winning the League Cup Mourinho should go now. His bizarre selections and awful tactics have ruined us and the players are not playing for him. In a one off game with a caretaker who gets Tottenham in charge who knows? Harry Ledley Glenn? Going forward a young coach with forward thinking fresh ideas. Cut a deal and get rid now

He was paid 15 mil a year to put us back into the top 4 after Levy stumped up for our two most expensive players ever. He has failed. The cold reality is that Levy is paying 15 mil a year for a manager who presided over our getting knocked out of the Ropey, by Zagreb, after leading 2-0. We lead the Prem at one point and we’ve let that lead slip to the tune of 25 points. This season has been a disaster of incompetence. Keeping Maureen on will look like Levy settling for this new reality.

I can’t see it. But wot do eye no.

Truth is for the pretence our chairman has that we are a big club in our player dealings we are small time. They buy Bruno Fernandez we get Gedson Fernandez says it all. Harry would get 40 goals a season playing for them.

The embarrassing thing is players will pick playing for Wet Spam over us.

The chance to play for Mourinho doesn’t have the pull it did especially now that he throws everyone under the bus, their gonna think sod that.

He is dragging the club down, his negativity, in tactics in interviews, he is well past his sell by date. No surprise things are rotting at Spurs with him in charge

Once we scored, we sat back, particularly in the second half, Utd smelt our negativity and lack of ambition. I was amazed how much better than us they were, especially in the second half, quicker to the ball, more incisive passing and generally quicker in every department. When Mourinho brought on Sissoko, my heart sank. I think the situation is coming to a head as we won’t be in next seasons CL, and even if we beat City in the Carabao final by some miracle, that is not enough to compensate us for the lack of income from the CL. One can only hope and pray that Lewis wakes up and realises that his little henchman is a walking disaster and sells up before we slide into lower table mediocrity and the club starts to lose imbedded value. I must admit to a slight chuckle, Schadenfreude in other words, when I think of all the mugs who think Levy is a genius, leading us to the promised land with world class facilities we hear so much about as we forget first and foremost that we are a football club, not a property investment company with a entertainment venue .

Inclined to agree but it’s hard to argue with his CV. If he’s got a decent base to build with he can create that ‘us against them’ siege mentality but that isn’t Spurs at all. We need someone who can improve players and not just throw them away….Levy won’t have players like Alli depreciating so much.

My hope and focus for the rest of this season will be on Lesta & spam to finish top 4, just to break protocol. And to see the Full Hams & the Seagulls stay up.

Think I might watch the Chicago 7 post League Cup final to help distract me from the result.

Not sure his management style is right for any top club anymore. Lashing out and blaming all and sundry makes him look foolish and out of touch. His substitutions today were baffling, along with falling out with our only defensive leader.

Winning the carabao cup is not enough for me. Obviously some deficiencies in the playing staff but look at how players have improved at Utd since mourinho left. He isn’t the right man for Spurs. Needs top jobs and title challenging teams, he can give them another 5-10% but his management style doesn’t work with the players we’ve got.

Dont think there’s much point saying we need new players because we know levy won’t sanction that, not to the level Mourinho would need. We need a manager who can get the best out of the players we have unfortunately and that ain’t Jose….

16 back line combinations so far this season someone posted. That would seem a probable issue even with 8 good defenders.

I dont see Mourinho lasting the season once we’ve lost our next 2-3 games. The energy in the 2nd half failed to match Utds, & they have players who can make a difference on there bench. Bale came on, and he looked pretty much disinterested. In all honesty, I dont see us making top 4 in the forseeable future… Utd, Citeh, Liverpool & the chavs all have more coherent sqauds than ours & all invest in their sqauds every season. We failed to do that 2-3 seasons back, and are now reliant on one or more of the others going in to meltdown in order for us to take one of their spots.

Ask yourself this; if we start next season as league cup holders, will that entice Kane to stay or top quality players to join?

When I write ‘top quality’ I mean better than Nbelly & Lo Celso.

Dier is not responsible for what is behind him. Serge was asleep, it was his mark. One difference with Toby, which is why he is still one of the 10 best CB’s in the world (he was superb with Belgium last month), is he is always looking for somebody to mark, if he doesn’t have somebody in front of him, he will look behind him and adjust his position to cover, if he needs to.

We were in first place when Dier and Toby were our regular pairing, we have lost 9 matches now since Jose started playing his f’d up mind games.

It’s over. No Champions League means no Jose. The Carabao Cup doesn’t bring enough financial reward to save his job and he knows it. His post match interviews show a defeated man. He inherited a squad with huge question marks hanging over key positions and now recognizes that Doctor Evil won’t allow him to spend the inevitable Kane transfer money on the quality reinforcements that are needed. What a mess.

We just don’t have the business model to seriously compete, unless we bump into a manager of exemplary punch above their weight ability, which I’ve reached the point of writing off Maureen as being. This attempt at being successful at a different type of club than his usual type has not gone well and I don’t see that changing. We are again the club we were before Redschnapps got us into the CL.

This result for me spells the death knell of the Poch leftovers plus a few quality extras era, and I can’t see this going anywhere meaningfully upwards for the next few years or so. Kane’s likely off, Son too probably, and Maureen will begin his penultimate season in the Ropey League yet again so we can forget Champions League quality incomers this summer. Keeping in mind that this team contains our two most expensive ever players who both looked ordinary today, the foreseeable future looks devoid of much hope or promise.

Winning the least prestigious trophy on offer will change none of the above, not to mention that the very notion of our beating city seems a ludicrous delusion; we couldn’t beat Dynamo Zagreb with a 2 goal lead.

We are the club that very expensively facilitated the career comedown of the worlds previously most successful football manager.

On a 1 to 10 scale of Spursyness, that’s a 9.5
