Like so many Tottenham players, Tanguy Ndombele is so close to being a great player, but we are only getting flashes, opposed to a consistent beam of light in games. If we look at this at a glance record from SofaScore, he just nudges over a 7, when he really ought to have that as his baseline.
If we look at his attributes, at first it appears that his technical abilities are much better than average (mustard line), and that is true, but if we look at where he was in 2019…
…the Frenchman is only where he was in 2019. And in some respects, he’s marginally declined in other disciplines. So what is vital is that Tanguy is encouraged to add to his game now before he starts to hit his peak years. No wonder Mourinho was so distraught over the lack of fitness and focus.
The 24-year-old is an extraordinary talent, but there’s still more to come.
Wot a loada kack
You’d sell our best natural footballer aged 23?
What do you know about his attitude? “Doesn’t think he needs to improve? How do you know? He’s just turned 23.
How do you know levy won’t? Old lane thinker
First full season (with no preseason) and he’s a failure? Your hatred of the man narf make you look silly
Don baller. People downgrading him coz he doesn’t run about all over the place. Did berby? Fantastic footballer.
I believe he falls into the “flatters to deceive” category. Some of the skills he demonstrates are extraordinary but he is not the driving leadership force that is needed. If you watched David Silva play for City he was everywhere, the ultimate ball hog always putting himself in position to receive, pass and go. In contrast TN wants the ball to come to him, forcing Jose to play him in a position in front of the defense where that is most likely to happen. Although this gets him more involved it also comes with risks due to his tendency to dribble or try fancy passes in positions dangerously close to his own goal. If it was down to me I would sell him while the price is still high and replace him with someone who is more cake than icing.
I agree. Worse still, a fair few players have regressed under his management.
From where Ndom was he is the most improved player on the planet, but I agree totally with what Jose is as a coach. Pep is similar. Both need the best players for their methods. Nothing wrong with that unless you are a Spurs fan who knows that Levy will not support Jose in the way he needs.
His Sofa reading should be a 10, because he must sit on it 20 hours a day! Heavens knows what his jaffa cake rating is. He has the same sofa score as Eric Dier (good grief). Stating he should do better just infuriates me. The simple fact is he isn’t doing better and that isn’t good enough.
Playing well v Sheff Utd does little to appease me. I know there is quality in this lad, but 2 fancy turns a game is not enough. He wouldn’t run through a brick wall for anyone, mainly because he can’t run (which in the modern game is unforgiveable) and tackles like a lad with osteoporosis. When he gets kicked he goes hiding, so that would be my tactic against him. Compare that to Werner, he is having a stinker in front of goal but his attitude and work rate are spot on.
Will be interesting to see how Ndom does v Man Utd and Man City. If he doesn’t perform in those 2 games I would get rid and use any funds to start the great rebuild. Maybe we should get Kevin McCloud in as a consultant, can’t be worse than Hitchen!
None of my mates who support other clubs want Ndom so that speaks volumes. They want Kane and Son and that is it. 5 years ago Dembele, Jan, Toby, Walker, Rose and Eriksen were on that list too.
Definitely would be on his school report.
My theory is that Jose can get the best out of fully formed pros and galvanise them into a siege mentality, and a winning machine. However, this working is very much to do the circumstances in which he finds himself, and that situation will not present itself in 2021 and certainly not at Spurs.
Most of our better quality players are not the finished article when they’re signed, so Tangy, Gio, Sessingon, Rodon etc all need to develop to reach their peak levels.
I am far from convinced that Jose is the right kind of coach to carry out this task, it’s not what he’s known for and there is very little to suggest that he will buck this preconception. If he was going to revitalise, rejuvenate this squad then would have been seeing the fruits by now.
He was positively glowing about he squad when he took over, he also seemed happy with the transfer business we did in the summer, under the circumstances. So if he isn’t improving a player like Tangy and we aren’t improving as a team I would suggest that so far he has been a failure.
I would have hoped he would have improved under Mourinho’s guidance, but as you say, he seems to have made little progress…
I tend to agree, I suspect the crux of his inconsistency is likely to be: doing too much / feeling too pressured or disappointment at not playing with better players technically.
I can look over my school reports from science class. A subject that interested me and I had a keen eye and understanding of the periodic elements table. Alas the reports always seemed to be cut and pasted from years earlier……… ‘Must do better’.
A player with huge talent and potential, however ‘He must do better’.
I’d say we have a player here who will never reach his full potential. His attitude and that alone will prevent him. I’ve seen it so many times. He doesn’t think he needs to improve and be more consistent. Just like he only cost £5 mill.
These players think they’ve done enough. They haven’t.
