Spurs will struggle to complete a deal that includes a swap claims pundit

By Bruce Grove -

Darren Bent believes that Tottenham will struggle to find players that they will use in a swap deal for Joe Rodon.

Spurs are looking to sign the Welsh defender before this transfer window closes on Friday, and it was suggested yesterday that they will look to add some players as a sweetener in the deal (Football Insider).

Bent admits that it is good to try and get a player in as part of the deal, but Tottenham is a Premier League team and they will struggle to see a player in their ranks that will be willing to drop down to the Championship for Rodon to move up.

He says it means that the player will be giving up their Premier League credentials and that will be tough.

Bent told Football Insider: “I guess it’s one of those things where they need to find a player at Spurs who’s happy to drop down to the Championship.

“I think that’s going to be the hard thing, it’s all well and good offering these pieces to Swansea as kind of a sweetener in the deal but you’ve got to find players who are willing to drop into the Championship and give up their Premier League credentials.

“That’s going to be the stumbling block but if they can get it over the line and find pieces that are willing to do that, that would be really, really good.”

I don’t always agree with Bent but on this occasion, I think he is right, it is going to be difficult to pull off a swap deal with a Championship outfit. Daniel Levy is going to have to put his hand in his pocket on this one.

CCV and Clarke spring to mind, that’s their level anyway. Also Skipp has dropped a division to play regularly and he didn’t make a big deal out of it.The truth is now our squad is considerably stronger so those fringe players are likely to see less or no playing chance going forward.

That’s the downside of buying cheaper punts – they’re hard to shift and you’ll lose money!
