The latest Pochettino video interview really put the cat amongst the pigeons, with our man Joe seeing Pochettino’s comments as heart-warming and decent, whereas I took a predictably less charitable view.
ESPN FC’s Steve Nicol and Julien Laurens decipher the meaning behind Mauricio Pochettino’s latest comments on his old club Tottenham, in which he said he’d be open to a return to the London club one day. Stevie and Juls both agree it was time for Pochettino to move on from Spurs, and that the club’s bigger mistake might end up being hiring current manager Jose Mourinho.
Is there an agenda against José in the football press? I’d say that actually goes without saying, at this stage. If you’re successful, but don’t make a huge effort to feign modesty, people will come for you. Especially in England.

I disagree Poch finally got us beating top 5 teams home and away went on record breaking runs and made white hart lane while we had it a fortress. I for one was proud and happy for some years watching our team play and take it to very good teams. People are in la la land if they think we will ever win the league with these parasite owners regardless of manager .Weve had all our fluke cheap signings in the Poch years and wont happen again, winning some carabo cup wont change nada if we play s h i t all season and come top six. I liked having a team that plays decent football where even rival fans when though bitter say your team are on game at the moment.
Poch had the 6th highest wage bill and he took the team as far as he could, which came close to League Cup, Premiership and European champions. I get that close is ‘no cigar’ but no one should forget where the accountability should lie. Every time we needed to kick on, Levy left him with crumbs. For three transfer windows he got nothing! When players should have been rewarded with improved contracts Levy made out it was an honour to play for Spurs. In the end the players knew there was no ambition, all the fans saw it. I’ve read no book on leadership where you can motivate from that standpoint. One thing is for sure, we’ll find out how Mourinho does with crumbs. A position he has never been in.
Mourinho walked into a team that has reached its absolute end, only has a couple of high end sellable players and we apparently have no money to fix it! In one season’s time we’ll be further behind Liverpool, City, Leicester, Chelsea, Man Utd and Wolves. We are on the slide and teams below us will take advantage. Something has to happen to change the narrative. The only way out if we have no funds is to sell Kane and look to build off that.
It made perfect sense when Poch got the shepherd’s hook to replace him with Santos rather than Mourinho. Santos knows how to build a team without spending mega money, which is what we needed (still do) and he has Premier League experience. I was surprised by Levy’s choice, but I think what he knows about football could be written on a stamp with a blunt crayon. Mourinho is marquee but he was not what we wanted at the time. He ‘guarantees’ trophies when he has an existing bunch of quality players and money. Under Poch the team had been run into the ground, with only Kane and Son living up to expectations. I do think Mourinho deserves time, but in the months he’s been here I have seen little to get excited about.
All the best still require motivation, there are players such as those you mention that are self motivated, but they still have to believe in the man doing the talking. These type of players are like gold dust, the voices on the pitch who keep that leadership and momentum going when the weaker minded ones are not giving their all, winners at all costs. Yes there are clubs that have winning trophies as top of the agenda, like RM, but I’m not sure Poch could handle such a job or player.
No foolish question and im aware of the difference i was asking an opinion!
The reason why i said without the cv is because a cv is a glimpse at what has been achieved and not so much of who they are today!
Im aware of pochs downfall shoving an unfit kane on in that final says it all
But i wouldn’t call his five years a failure even though it wasnt a success obviously!
If it has merely opened the eyes of that smug bald mans to the fact that competing without investing in top players is a possibility in modern day football is anything other than a pipedream then we have at least stepped forward
Somehow doubt it has though
If poch was at madrid with ronaldo bale ramos, and chelsea with multimillions and all the best players then im sure he would have won stuff.. Nearly all the managers at chelsea ‘win stuff’ then sacked a year later. Its all been down to roman investing in quality … Espanyol, southampton, spurs are all little clubs, who dont spend, dont win.. The difference between maureen and poch has been their clubs.
Ah sorry mate i missed that key point.. Aye maureens style isn’t my preference, i prefer poch/klopp syle. Team press, high press, take the game to them.. Maureen is supposedly a tactical genius who can adapt and adjust styles according to opposition. Its tough to judge the guy really until he gets his own players in. So far its stephen bergwin and gedson in one window.. If levys targeting and buying the players still then we wont be competing with liverpool and city etc..
You want the Wolves manager.
Does he come equipped with a magic wand and a time-machine?
Jonathan, you appear to have less than zero grasp of football.
JOSÉ
Maturity, self awareness and he knows how to win.
Without seeking being rude – if you have to ask the difference between a man with a CV that is an embarrassment of riches, and a man that does not have a CV, then the question is an essentially daft one.
POCH
Pochettino lacks awareness of who he is and
where he is in the footballing food chain. The idea (he has created in
his own mind) that he would waltz back to the rapturous applause is
beyond parody.
He was a spectacular failure at
Tottenham. Huge. 5 and half years and we won nothing. He actively
dismissed winning on more than one occasion.
Is winning under Levy a possibility? Well, that’s a different question.
How Poch wishes to be perceived by history – which only deals in cold hard
facts – and how he views himself are tragically divided.
But he… ‘s never won anything.
Maybe he’ll pen another £4.99 book and explain what I missed.
Thats a very fair analysis if only the two could blend and make poch football with winners lol and like i said im not against jose fully backing him next season just hope levy does
Mourinho irrespective of style of play, has found a way to reach players and motivate them to make them winners, through his own character and personality, players believe in you or they don’t. Poch plays attractive football that the players like, but has he been able to reach and motivate them to make them winners, the answer is plain to see.
I’m with joe… Though H’s ‘Argentinian brent’ made me roar with laughter. Can picture the Christmas party, poch doing the full David brent dance to levy and the other suits.
My worry is that Mourinho’s style of football is dire. He took over a very strong and already successful Inter Milan team and bored his way to the European Cup. His Man Utd team won a few trophies, backed by hundreds of millions of pounds, but they were awful to watch. I loved watching them fall to the depths of mediocrity. I do think Utd were wrong to back Pogba over Mourinho, but that is a different argument. They have the finances to keep buying to dig themselves out of the hole they were in (Wan Bissaka, Maguire, Fernandez). Do we? How long would it take Spurs to spend £180m, three years? Of course, I want Spurs to win a trophy. If Mourinho can bring success and lay a platform for this to continue year after year, manager after manager, so be it. I’ll take that, but to rip out the identity of the club for the sake of another George Graham, is a very big if. We have a defence that has not improved since his arrival and a midfield so devoid of ideas and/or talent that we play long balls just so it is as far from Lloris as possible. The rebuild at Spurs is massive and I don’t think Mourinho is a rebuild type of manager. I want Wolves’ Santos at Spurs, sooner rather than later.
I did say ignoring past successes i get that and you cant deny the man and im not anti jose just watching the football we were playing didnt feel gr8 in my mind he has next season before i judge him but just didnt seem good
Multiple trophies at every club he’s been. Maureens winning resume.
English mainstream media do like to build people up. Then hound them for failure. I stopped buying their papers and supporting these cretins ages ago.
Definitely. When you “big up yourself” as he has done, it’s inevitable. His achievements merit some patience. Give him some time and support and then we’ll see if he still has it or not. It’s worth persisting to find out. I’d love nothing more than for him to prove to all his doubters that he does indeed, still have it. Jury’s our for me so far but I’ll give him my support and give him a complete season at least.
Harry genuine question as at the end of the day we all just want spurs winning stuff. Ignoring past successess or not in pochs case What is it you see in Mourinho that you didnt see in poch
