Report: West Ham Game Make Or Break For Mauricio Pochettino

By Joe Fish -

Mauricio Pochettino could be sacked as Tottenham Hotspur manager if he loses against West Ham United, according to The Telegraph.

Spurs broke for the international fixtures 14th in the Premier League table, 11 points adrift of the top four, with only three wins in 12 games this season and visit their London rivals in their first game back on November 23rd.

Tottenham’s poor form stretches back to the second half of last season, with the club having accumulated 25 points over the course of their last 24 matches, masked by a memorable run to the Champions League final.

Matt Law of The Telegraph understands that Pochettino is reaching “the point of no return” as the hierarchy start to doubt whether he can salvage their campaign, the West Ham game now rated as “make or break”.

We have not won an away game since January and Law adds that defeat at the home of an arch enemy like West Ham could force Daniel Levy to act.

Levy would be reluctant to sack a manager who has done so much for the club and worked under his tight financial restrictions, but concern appears to be growing and no vote of confidence in the Argentine has been issued.

It may depend on the size of the pay-off Poch would receive and what potential replacements are available and interested. More on that later…

We’ve got no one to prepare a team in an emergency at our club.

You know what I can believe it. Scott Parker leaving was a major loss to him and us. Maybe he coulda had a crack at the big job. Caretaking, but if he did well… Maybe not then😁

I am not worried about the NFL at all, I hope we get a franchise. Even ENIC are making eye watering money from them, they maybe willing to make a little less off us.

NFL have been talking about a UK/Euro franchise for a few years, and its not going away. I think they have reached the point where they feel they have maxed out their cash cow and need to expand. Hence why Fulham owner wanted Wembley and we added £300m in stadium costs to cater for NFL. This is with a bigger picture in mind.
I think for ENIC to change, they will need to sack a few more managers, and feel they have conclusive proof that the manager is not to blame (one would have thought they have that), and winning to be more valuable than it is. ENIC do not care about having tin pots in a cupboard, they want MONEY! Currently getting top 4 is cheaper than winning the league and brings in almost as much money. CL you just need to get out of group stages. They don’t seem to have realised the increased revenue through sponsorship, but one could argue would that offset the cost in player acquisitions and wages? The ENIC model is simple, spend as little as possible to get as much money as possible. The fans are just customers…but better because they have a religious desire to stick with their club.

You are right about the riches abounding in the NFL, but the NFL is in the US and is not going to run an offshoot in the UK or Europe. The stadium is unlikely to stage more than a couple of NFL matches per annum which will not compensate Enic for falling attendances and season ticket sales. Furthermore, lack of CL qualification will hurt the club’s finances. I wonder what will be the catalyst for Enic and Levy to change their business model. Perhaps a half empty stadium might wake them up, coupled with Harry Kane asking for a transfer. Whatever happens, I cannot see things continuing as they are now.

NFL is worth more than football by a long stretch, the money is not even close. Even poor teams in the NFL are richer than some of the most successful football teams. So ENIC will not leave the premises, but I would say they would be willing to accept a bid for THFC and separate property from the club (so we are renters). As for the cost of watching, hard to argue while people keep paying it, until people stop going, and season tickets stop having waiting lists, things wont change. The THFC business model has never needed Europe, and never will, its a bonus.

It has been stated by a senior executive at the club that the new venue design was all about what was needed for an NFL stadium. No detail was left out and the recent NFL players who played there said they were amazed at the attention to even the smallest detail that had been incorporated. Now compare that with the way THFC is being run. What does that tell you? What amazes me is the absolute lack of respect shown to the history of THFC and its fans. They have used the legacy and assets of THFC to build something that they see as primarily for other purposes than for the benefit of THFC. They have modeled the THFC business plan as zero net investment in the playing staff and securing top four each season to suck up the CL revenue. They have no aspiration or desire to invest to win anything. Yet they look to charge the supporters prices associated with title and cup winning sides. This sham is the reason that players come and then go along with managers. They pay our players less than the market rate and do not offer any hope of winning anything whilst at the club thus flushing their careers down the toilet(watch this space for Harry Kane). Why would any quality players or managers wish to be associated with that scenario? Sadly a relegation battle or even relegation itself might be the only lever to prise these ENIC parasites out and allow new owners to come in and take the club forward. Maybe the Chinese who are looking for prestige and Western assets and to raise the profile of football in China would see THFC as an opportunity? Not sure and NFL owner would see THFC as the primary focus.

Joe – yesterday you were spouting about how he is best buddies with Levy and is not likely to be on the block, and a day later, no results have changed you are “regurgitating” an article from another source with no additional value added to it. I agree the West Ham game should be make or break, I hate losing to them more than any other side, but realistically speaking, what is the likelihood this is true based on your article yesterday?
I must admit though 28 points from 25 games, to extrapolate that over 38 games we would only just make the 40 point threshold.
