Report: Tottenham among the top ten most expensive squad in Europe’s top five leagues

By Eddie Razo -

This summer, Tottenham Hotspur added various players to improve their squad as they head into a new direction under Managing Director of Football Fabio Paratici and manager Nuno Espírito Santo.

As the two men shaped the squad, they added names such as Cristian Romero, Emerson Royal, Bryan Gil, and Pierluigi Gollini to mold the team in their vision. However, these additions have put the north London-based club into of the top ten most expensive squads, per CIES Football Observatory

Here’s the list of the top ten list that includes six Premier League clubs, including Tottenham:

  1. Manchester City – €1.08-billion
  2. Manchester United – €1.023-billion
  3. PSG – €939-million
  4. Real Madrid – €787-million
  5. Chelsea – €780-million
  6. Liverpool – €672-million
  7. Juventus – €657-million
  8. Arsenal – €630-million
  9. FC Barcelona – €578-million
  10. Tottenham – €551-million

Now having one of the more expensive squads in Europe, Tottenham hopes this will be the season to lift some silverware as they invested in the squad.

Unfortunately, Utd, City, Chelsea and Liverpool are so far ahead that just to get amongst them is nigh on impossible at the moment. Being in the top 10 is admirable, but not when you’re behind 5 teams in your own league, 4 of which are far better run off the field. Arsenal have shown that squad value means nothing if the club has no coherent plan.

Come to Spurs and see your value plunge, and your international prospects shrivel – that seems to be the case with most of our buys. Alli’s worth about 25% of his value four years ago, Sessegnon’s dropped about a third in two years, ditto Lo Celso. No one wanted N’dombele in the last window, and three current internationals generated a reported total of £6 million for the coffers (including Aurier’s free). Without Kane’s hypothetical value (which we’ll be lucky to realise half of when he does eventually go), we’d probably not make the top twenty, so well done Levy – we’ll be drowning in jam one of these days!
