Mourinho eyeing a move for Spurs player who he once labelled as ‘second to nobody in European football’

Jose Mourinho’s reported interest in signing Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, should Nemanja Matic leave Roma to join Rennes, adds another layer of potential movement to the summer transfer market.

According to Calciomercato, Matic’s potential move to Rennes could prompt Mourinho to target Ndombele as a replacement.

Ndombele spent the previous season on loan at Napoli, contributing to them winning the Serie A.

While Napoli reportedly wanted to sign him on a permanent deal at a reduced fee but the move did not work out.

Italian journalist Rudy Galetti has previously indicated that Ndombele might not be in Ange Postecoglou’s plans.

He also mentioned interest from Turkish clubs Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, but no advanced talks have been reported yet.

Mourinho’s familiarity with Ndombele from their time together at Tottenham could make Roma a possible destination for the midfielder. During his tenure at Spurs, Mourinho had expressed admiration for Ndombele’s talent.

Mourinho regarded his talent highly and stated that the midfielder “is second to nobody at this moment in European football.”

He said:

“Tanguy, I have to be honest, Tanguy is the kind of guy who you always expect more than what he gives you, because he is so talented that you always expect more.”

“More because the talent is amazing. You know I think by the talent point of view, by the creation in midfield, by the vision, he is second to nobody at this moment in European football.”

Given Ndombele’s history under Mourinho and the potential opportunity to revive his career with Roma, a transfer could benefit both the player and the club, allowing him to contribute to revive his career.
