Mourinho Admits Bergwijn Wasn’t His Buy, Takes Veiled Dig At Ndombele?|video

By Joe Fish -

Jose Mourinho has confessed that Steven Bergwijn was not his first-choice signing in his first transfer window as Tottenham manager.

The Dutch winger arrived from PSV Eindhoven in January and has made a positive impact with three goals in six Premier League games, including a superb solo opener in Friday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

However, Mourinho admitted to his press conference today that all credit for signing Bergwijn must go Daniel Levy and the recruitment team.

It is a strange thing to admit publicly but I think Mourinho’s comments are innocent enough. He didn’t say he wanted this winger, or that winger instead. He said he wasn’t his first-choice signing and that’s because he was probably looking at other areas such as central midfield and up front.

It does open up a can of worms though about who is choosing the players…

That’s a discussion for another day, because what else I found interesting was that that Mourinho made a point of praising the 23-year-old for having such a good attitude for a relatively young kid. Do you know who else is 23? – Tanguy Ndombele. Might this have been a veiled dig at the Frenchman?

😆 bergwjn was poor on fifa before he joined us rated 77 raised to 80.. On a par with the likes of dier and winks. Ndombele wasnt rated much better .. Obsessive competitive top fifa player here.. If one were to go by fifa ratings then levy is buying in average to below average players.. Their ratings are usually about right… Levy can’t be buying the players or we are doomed.. Last decent transfer window was under paul mitchel and poch… Before that the sporting director baldini was disastrous… We need decent scouts, and a proper footballing sporting director who is in tune with maureen… Our recent windows under levy has been frustrating and exhausting.

Everything about Spurs is dull as dishwater at the moment.
The manager, the owners, the football the recruiting of players.

After the 5 seasons or so under Poch it all feels like a massive anticlimax.
New stadium and a wet phart of a team.

All conceived and rubber stamped by our esteemed chairman…

I knew nothing about Bergwijn before he joined. Someone told me he was good on FIFA! Must be where Levy has his recruitment team based. He’s done ok, but there was no plan in this transfer. Mourinho must have had ideas of players to buy and Levy just signs who he likes, ignoring that the defence is on its Harris!

You really need a defensive midfielder, a right back and a striker, so you sign a winger a position where we are well covered.

Why don’t we sign ten wingers and tell the manager to deal with it. Our beloved chairman makes the decisions about transfers but it not about what we need as a team but whether we can make a profit on a new signing. The transfer strategy is based on Levy’s knowledge of world wide footballers which is zero. Levy is a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Bergwin has done well. Potential for sure. Him and lucas competing for the right wing are good options for now… It’s the ‘can of worms’ that has to be sorted out though.. It wouldnt suprise me in the next window if we signed another winger and no striker.
