In today’s edition of Tuttosport, the discussion turns to AC Milan’s courtship of Ralf Rangnick, which is understandably overshadowed by the Coronavirus. Yet what may be of interest to Spurs fans is that Mitchell has become increasingly revered in the game.
The career of the man that Daniel Levy some 3 years ago sacked, in an incredible manoeuvre that included a notice period of some 16-months, appears to be going from strength to strength with The Italian press already imagining what Ralf Rangnick’s go-to transfer man might achieve.
Paul is currently head of recruitment of German club RB Leipzig, where Ralf Rangnick is the head coach. The excitement in Italy is that the pair might arrive in the capital as a double deal.
I said of Mitch in August 2016, “I take a view that Premier League football is a small world and if there are any ‘issues’ with Mitchell, they will be revealed when he struggles to gain meaningful employment elsewhere.” Just recently, we looked at a piece in The Guardian where Tottenham’s former scout David Webb sang Mitchell’s praises.
Clearly, Levy binned a winner.
MORE Meunier Alternative

One of Levy’s biggest mistakes. He should have backed Mitchell who is clearly a man who knows what he’s doing. Levy should be taking a back seat over transfers. Of course he will be involved in the money side and negotiation but as for identifying players he really should step away.
Sadly this is spot on.
Penny wise, pound foolish. He’s made a lot of money for Joe Lewis and himself, but treats the supporters with contempt.
ENIC OUT!
As a famous Irishman said, Levy knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.
Exactly, pointless working for someone who knows very little about the actual football side of things.
More poor football decisions from Levy.
ENIC OUT!
Scouting/Recruitment networks have changed dramatically since an ex pro watched from the stands and made a subjective judgement. Statistics are the new King and the old brigade don’t like it. Harry Redknapp dismissed Prozone when it first came out, therefore I’m surprised that Levy, an educated man, wasn’t in to the Moneyball way of doing things. With the money involved all top class teams across the world must follow a statistical approach to training and scouting. That means there are hundreds of statisticians and recruitment ‘experts’ trawling over every player’s data to find a gem. Did Levy see something we don’t know about with Mitchell because it is obvious they fell out, but over what? Did Levy think he knew better and Mitchell told him otherwise? Of the two mentioned, Ragnick and Mitchell, Ragnick is the one who I would have appointed first because there are only a few like him. Men like him then appoint the Mitchell’s of this world. This is what worries me about Spurs. We need a long term strategy, not one based on sacking managers after results go south.
Is the head coach not Julian Nagelsman? I think Rangnick is director of sport. Levy f****ed up with Mitchell. I suspect that he turned down all Mitchell’s recruitment suggestions to revert to his tried and trusted methods of buying cheap. What is the point of employing people of ability, only to ignore their advice and continue his fruitless attempts at playing recruitment expert. Ten managers during his tenure and one trophy in twenty years says it all.
