“Let’s not be silly” Talksport pundits ridicule Spurs fan saying opponent fans are “laughing at you” (Video)

By Bruce Grove -

Every club has an eclectic mix of fans, some are pessimists, some are optimists and of course, you have the downright deluded.

Arsenal has cornered the market in delusion, however, if Ben, a caller to Talksport last night is anything to go by, Spurs certainly have their own share of fans that may need to be drug tested.

Ben called up to have a chat with Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy and came out with some humdingers, including Spurs can get top four and win a trophy, that we should have been three up at halftime against West Ham and that Spurs are better than West Ham and Leicester City right now.

Have a watch and listen, it is kind of enjoyable in its own little way.

9 games in doesn’t represent how the league will finish. Brighton are 5th West Ham are 4th. By the logic used so far by some in this group they have better squads than us and for that reason will finish above us.

Does anyone seriously believe Brighton will finish above us. Can West Ham make it 2 years in a row? If they do it actually shows how much of giant step backwards we’ve taken.

United win he thinks.. Alot will depend who plays and who turns up on the day.. I fancy us, but would have to see both teamsheets first.. If Dele Winks Davies (a couple more) are on there then our chances decrease rapidly with each player..

Wow.. All coming from a self professed Botchite too.. 6 years winning nothing, and you’re still happy clapping him ten years after he took charge and four years after he’s gone…. There are definitely weak fans not supporting the team, on here only the other day two ‘fans’ were wishing us to lose heavily to the Toon. Which we won.. This is even more than annoying than you, a jumped up little prick who resorts to name calling fellow fans as soon as opinions sway from your own. You will rarely 100percent agree with anyone in the football world, its a sport with divisive opinions.. So unless you are looking for an actual fight, wind your neck in…….. I agree with Kosher Kid on Arsenal and Leicester. Those two aren’t better than us and the table is telling.

Spurs have always followed the money. Spurs were very much regarded as a cup team in the 70’s and 80’s before the Premier League. In those days winning a cup got you European football. That equated to extra games and extra revenue through ticket sales and TV money.

Spurs were a big club then because they successfully won cup competitions, generated more income through this and signed better players. Spurs pursued cup wins over league points in those days. Why? Because it earned the club more money.

The Premier League and the Champions League changed all that. Winning the League Cup or the F.A. Cup only means anything if you have qualified for the Champions League. The reason for this is the remuneration.

Winning a domestic cup without being in the top 4 is not enough. The financial rewards are miles apart. The current gooner team of the last decade are proof of this. Levy and ENIC for all their faults are not to blame for this. This is just how it is.

The domestic cups are no longer worth winning from a financial point of view. This is reflected in the team selections in the early rounds by all top flight clubs. The priority is Premier League points. That is where the money is.

Winning a cup and getting top 4 in the same season is as good as it gets for a club like Spurs, Manchester United and Arsenal in 2021. It is a consolation prize for the also rans.

Winning the Premier League and the Champions League is all that matters to the serious clubs who are all bankrolled.

My optimism is based around the home form and the fact that Nuno has started making some decisions in recent weeks. He has binned Dele and Winks. He has settled on a formation and first choice 11. He has sent a message to all the passengers that they need to shape up or ship out.

This was long overdue in the case of Winks and although Dele had more credit in the bank I think we have all come to realise that his attention seems to be on his haircut, image and profile rather than his football.

There are others who remain in the starting 11 who may also now start looking over their shoulders as a result of the recent decisions Nuno has taken.

Ronaldo and Cavani are the type of signings Spurs made when they signed Sheringham, Poyet and Davids. They paid too much for Sancho and if City had wanted him back they would have bought him.

Spurs are spending a lot less than United but are at the same level.

Sorry but that is just how it is.

Perhaps I didn’t explain my view concisely enough for you. My assertion was that City and Chelsea can always outspend United on wages and transfer fees. Not sure that is the case for Liverpool. Newcastle may now offer better terms than United too so this makes it more difficult or expensive for United to attract the best players.

Does that make sense?

I support Spurs and I want Spurs to beat Manchester United on Saturday. I believe it is possible. It is a fact that we sit above them and it is a further fact that Manchester United have dropped points to 5 teams this season. They conceded 4 to Leicester and 5 to Liverpool.

I don’t fear or respect this Manchester United team because they don’t deserve our respect and we shouldn’t fear them.

The direction of Spurs has been backwards since Moussa Dembele left the club. We had arguably stood still in the 18 months before that. Since then Wanyama, Eriksen, Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Trippier and Rose have left the club.

In general the players we have asked to replace these players have so far not been up to the task. Romero has shown signs that he may be a decent replacement for Toby.

Nuno has had 9 league games and has done enough to so far keep us in 2 cup competitions. It hasn’t been great so far. However; Nuno is getting the blame for the previous 2 years of garbage we have endured.

Nuno has achieved around a 50% win ratio in all his previous jobs. He deserves a season and 3 windows to show Spurs what he can do. He also deserves a little respect. He is on the right track with Winks, Dele, his preferred 11 and the shape.

Give the man a chance.

Without a shadow of a doubt It looks like both clubs are in a situation they don’t want to be in regarding their managers.
The result of Saturday’s game will surely determine the futures of one of them but in particular Solskjaer, who everyone knows is on borrowed time.
You could say the same about Nuno, but Tottenham don’t have any real options to bring in, they are probably waiting for next summer when their target for the job is more likely to be available.

And things aren’t going to change anythime soon, other than Newcastle getting in on the act.

You need to many things based on nothing other than good fortune.
The only way now is to invest at the going rate and heavily, there are no other options on the table, none.

That’s the name of the game now boys.

We now have owners getting involved in football not to make money, they just want the glory, and how that reflects on them.

It’s almost like football has gone full circle in a perverse way. From being about football, to then being about making money, to back to being about football, only with a whole load more wages and transfer fees.

Chelsea, City, Liverpool are streets ahead of everyone else and you’re trying to say that their spending has had nothing to do with it? The reason why they have good managers is precisely because they back them, and properly. What you’re saying makes no sense whatsoever…

I think the most obvious result to me is a draw.

However, neither side will want to lose, if Man Utd take an early lead of 2 goals or more, it’s curtains for us.

If Spurs take a lead and it’s less than 3 goals with 15 minutes to go it’s a draw.

If it’s a draw with 10 minutes to go, we are hanging on for dear life for the draw.

It’s got nothing to do with man for man squads or form, these games for us, are always about mental strength, and unfortunately the times we have come up short far out weigh the times we haven’t in the era of the current owners.

I really like your optimism Kosher, but it is not based on fact, it’s just your opinion, as you well know.

Yes, every now and then we have found the mental strength to pull some results out of the bag, but more often than not, when the spot light is on us against the real Big Boys we have come up short.

I hope Saturdays game is one of the occassions where the result goes our way against a big rival, and I will be well happy.

If it comes down to who gets the luck, well that will not be us will it, you know that just as much as I do.

Stats be damned, look at facts. What have we won in comparison to Utd, Chelsea, Man City, Leicester and Arsenal over the last 20 years? Success is derived from winning trophies and competitions, not qualifying for the Champions League or Europa League. ENIC will never back whoever the manager is like the other clubs do and will.

Our current squad is so lacking in quality and depth that we have very little chance of winning anything for the foreseeable future. I dream that we will, but grim reality and past lack of investment tell me otherwise.

Of course you are right. Those stats are damning. The thing is Man United at home is always a big game with an expectation from the supporters. The atmosphere will be positive unless or until Spurs go 2 goals behind.

United are there for the taking in my opinion. What better chance will Spurs have to catch United at a low point? This is as low as they have been for some time. Nuno could earn his Spurs and would be well advised to drop the negative tactics completely for what is effectively a one off fight to the death for both managers. I bet Levy wishes he could get Nuno and Ole in a ring on pay per view after the game tbh.

I expect United to be cagey and look for counter attacks. Spurs should go balls deep to smash them. The crowd will ride that wave and if Nuno gets lucky then Kane and Son find their shooting boots and Spurs earn a massive victory that sends United’s season into a tailspin of what to do next. They’ve tried everything to succeed and nothing has worked. Even the Jose trophies were resented.

I hope Nuno is brave.

I hate their methods. As I explained; I gave up my season ticket in Block 19 of the lower Paxton in 08 due to their miserly penny pinching and ambiguous nonsense promising jam tomorrow.

However; these methods that I hate have worked for 20 years. ENIC only ever talked about increasing the WHL capacity and regular Champions League qualification. It was a 5 year plan that took 15 years in respect of the ground and 10 in respect of the Champions League.

They have delivered what they said they would. They never spoke of trophies as being the mission. They quoted Abramovich a ‘silly price’ for the club. They persuaded Hoddle to speak publicly about Rivaldo’s letter. They gave Redknapp Louis Saha and Ryan Nelson. They got Poch to say he was ‘berry appy’.

There have been clues every step of the way. The Colosseum is now built but the team are a bit off. It might take a bit longer than you would like but I reckon it will come around again.

United pay bigger wages and go after the best players they can get. However; they themselves can no longer compete with City or Chelsea. The Newcastle thing just adds to their problems in the short to medium term.

United’s board will be under huge pressure to sack Ole if they lose this game. That was what I was referring to in terms of them ‘bricking it’. they will understand that this game is a difficult one for United under the current circumstances.

Of course the United loving media will spin the line about United bouncing back after a heavy defeat. They love United almost as much as they love sticking the boot into Spurs.

I do have a bit of time on my hands at the moment as it happens. I’m ill with a touch of the flu type variety. Amazed at how negative the vibe is here at the moment. We’ve been through much much worse. I’m a veteran of course. A ‘legacy’ supporter I think the phrase is these days.

I agree with a lot of what the landlord says but I really do think there are some delusional views regarding the quality of Spurs current competition in the tear up for 4th place and the subsequent Europa / Conference spots through the league.

West Ham have Randolph pushing Fabianski in goal and players like Cresswell and Noble in their squad. If they progress in the Europa they will drop league points in the 2nd half of the season. Leicester are the only team for Spurs to worry about along with United.

I expect Spurs to win against United on Saturday. Call me old fashioned but I support the team and believe I am realistic when it comes to estimating our chances in games like this. I’ve certainly seen worse Spurs teams beat better United teams at WHL in the past.

Good luck with the cynicism and hate for the club.

Score was 0-0 when Tanganga was sent off @ Palace. It happens. Chelsea turned us over and deserved the win. The NLD was a disaster because of these results and Nuno’s tactics. Since the NLD Dele has been dumped and the Vitesse away game was an attempt by Nuno to dig out the slackers.

He has settled on a formation and 1st choice starting 11 and although it is a difficult watch at times; the home performances and results have been better and Nuno appears to be making progress with the players he has available and who actually want to play / are good enough to play.

I think these players will lift their game because it is Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United in front of a full house. The supporters will be up for it and United will be fragile. Spurs need to score first. Calling for Nuno’s head at this point is really disappointing to me. Who do we think we are going to attract as manager if we actually sack the man after 10 games?

The truth is that many of our supporters and players have never moved on from the sacking of Poch. Nuno is about the best we can do at the moment and he is not the worst manager Spurs have ever appointed. He has a two year contract and deserves at least three windows to put his mark on the team.

We couldn’t beat Crystal Palace, we couldn’t raise our game for the NLD . Same for WHU last week. No shots on goal for 45 mins. Last night the same.

Why you think these players will

Kosher Kid
Kosher Kid

If Spurs had just been humped 0-5 at the Lane in the NLD would you expect them to go to Old Trafford, with a manager like Ole, and win because we had squad players like Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Phil Jones, Diogo Dalot, Alex Telles, Jesse Lingaard and Donny Van De Beek.

It’s just ridiculous to think such a thing. Spelling it out is embarrassing. However; this seems to be the parallel universe that some Spurs supporters are indulging themselves in.

United, as a club, will be absolutely bricking it about this fixture. If Spurs not only win, but win well with a performance, the United board may be forced to sack a club legend and their season / project is back to where it was when they sacked Jose.

Only at Spurs could we not see this an opportunity to turn the screw on a rival team for 4th place in the league.

Kosher Kid
Kosher Kid

So your objectives are purely political? Attempt to remove ENIC by all means and if Spurs go down with them so be it?

I can’t do that. I just can’t.

Spurs supporters have needed supporter representation since ENIC arrived. I’ve been calling for it since 2003. Spurs need an independent supporters association with no links to the club. A separate entity.

The best way to frighten Levy, in my opinion, would be a project like AFC Hotspur of Tottenham. If plans were put in place, by an independent supporters group, to set up and organise towards this end he would have to listen to the supporters eventually.

Levy and ENIC got all the potential dissenting voices on board with the project from day 1 through the supporters trust. Levy’s known their thoughts from the start and brought them in house on board the gravy train.

We’re competing for a place between 4th and 10th with West Ham, Manchester United, Arsenal, Leicester and Everton. With our support Nuno and the players will have a better chance of achieving that.

West Ham, Leicester and Everton have a better chance of achieving 4th place at the moment because their supporters are not calling for the removal of the manager. This will also help them attract new players if it’s a choice between them and us for the same wages.

Spurs, Arsenal and United are in a different position with uncertainty about the manager hanging over the clubs.

We should show a bit of class and not behave like the fecking gooners and the plastic mancs.

You disagree; fair enough. However; as I have already stated I am no ENIC or Levy apologist. I know what they are and what they have done. I gave up my season ticket in Paxton Road, which I had held for over a decade, after the 2007/08 season, due to the sacking of Martin Jol, for all the same reasons that had been occurring and reoccurring ever since.

I was on to the Supporters Trust as early as 2003 when they sat back and applauded Levy while he took away club membership from season ticket holders, created a season ticket waiting list, as a stick to beat existing season ticket holders with, while hiking ticket prices, merchandise and food at the ground.

I took direct action. I stopped spending money in the ground, I stopped buying replica shirts and eventually I gave up my season ticket. The ‘loyalty’ scheme finished me off for reasons which would take ages to explain. I do not like ENIC.

Despite all of this; I love Spurs and I believe that as bad as we are and despite the mistakes that have been made, this Spurs team are easily good enough to compete with the current West Ham, Manchester United, Arsenal, Everton and Leicester City squads for 4th place this season. If we beat all of them at home then we need to match up or better their results against all the rest. It is not impossible.

We are within touching distance now. A good January window, with more dross jogged on and a couple of new signings may put Spurs in an even stronger position.

I understand the displeasure with the style of play and Nuno’s appointment but; while he is in the job we should support him and the players. If we don’t will we be any better than Levy and ENIC?

I doubt we have a squad to compete for top four, top six possibly, but more to the point it is highly unlikely with a manager who plays a system that is bereft of attacking football.
To win games you have to score goals, Nuno may be limited with attacking options available, but his style of play is not going to achieve anything as it is, only mid table obscurity.

O’Hara & Cundy.. it was difficult to take them seriously as Premier League footballers and it’s even more difficult to take them seriously as pundits. That Spurs fan calling was a tad optimistic but he’s called a wind up show designed to generate telephone calls.
West Ham are definitely improving and have had a decent run. Just look at their November fixtures. Let’s see where they are at Xmas with tough Europa League games every week.
I think it’s fair to say Spurs are a long way off finishing in the top 4 right now but mathematically it’s not impossible. Who knows ..

I cannot understand why sections of our own support are joining in with the likes of Cundy and the anti Spurs rhetoric. Look at that league table. We know Spurs could and should be doing better with the players we have available yet we are still above Leicester and Manchester United and two points behind West Ham who are apparently brilliant under David Moyes.

Please just think about what is happening at the moment. Do we actually want to help the team or turn on them and sink the ship because we are fed up with Levy and ENIC?

Spurs are in a scrap for 4th place with United, West Ham, Arsenal, Leicester and Everton. None of these teams are going to finish above 4th in my opinion. Nuno has had 9 league games and Spurs are still in the League Cup and the Conference League.

We should be helping the team to improve by supporting Nuno and the players until at least the end of the season. That will be the time to judge Nuno and this group.

I hate Cundy. A Chelsea see you next Tuesday who never misses a chance to put the boot into Spurs despite masquerading as a top flight centre half and stealing a living from Spurs as an absolutely dreadful centre back. Jamie O’Hara should not allow himself to be manipulated by this joker into turning on Spurs.

Spurs are not great this year but I’m not having that we cannot compete with these teams for 4th place with the players we have available.
