Daniel Levy’s Transfer Market Free Pass?|opinion

By Bruce Grove -

Shock horror, Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho will be reduced to doing swap deals and free transfers as we recently reported and yet potential high value transfer deals are still being touted by the media.

The truth is that the media know no more than anyone else right now but if Daniel Levy ever needed an excuse to keep his hands in his pocket he certainly has it right now.

Most clubs are going to be hit financially, including the big boys. Huge transfer deals accompanied by massive salaries are most likely a thing of the past, certainly in the short term anyway.

It really is going to be a bit of a free for all with so many clubs facing restricted budgets as the cost of the Coronavirus pandemic starts to bite.

Free agents are all of a sudden going to be hot property and their agents will no doubt play one club off against another in a bid to squeeze out the highest possible wage for their clients, especially in the absence of any transfer fee to line their greedy pockets with.

But therein lies the problem, clubs are not going to be eager to pay out huge wages knowing the resulting bad PR that will invite. Agents are going to fight against swap deals because they get nothing in terms of commission on the transfer fees.

For some clubs, this is going to get all messy but for Tottenham, it is kind of par for the course and hardly constitutes a kick in the stomach. The fans are well used to Levy being as tight as a ducks butt and so the news that Mourinho is going to have his hands tied is not earth-shattering. It was expected really.

The media will report on £50 million deals, that you can take to the bank but the reality, or so it seems today, is that Tottenham is highly likely to be very quiet when the transfer window opens.

Swap deals look unlikely and the mass scramble to sign free agents will narrow the choice down and, in my opinion, you can forget all about any mega-deals.

Everything points to there being almost no transfer activity this summer, for Tottenham anyway and that really is not a surprise.

This whole situation isn’t a nightmare for Levy, it’s a godsend. Free transfers, further excuses to be even more frugal (if that’s possible!).

Sure he’s missed out on the NFL game and a concert but overall the effects on spending over the next few seasons will fill him with joy. Austerity FC is what we’ve been for over 20 years anyway…

The transfer market at the top level has really tailed off in the last few years anyway. At the end of the day, no matter how much money is sloshing about in top flight football, 50 plus million for the kind of player that you’ll have cost you 25m about three years ago is an unsustainable inflation of fees. The whole of the market needs a bit of a rethink, possibly tribunals and a value ratings system . Wages though are harder to control.

It’s going to be a turgid summer transfer wise. Little to no action for most teams, ourselves included.

If I’ve said it once I have a hundred times. Our beloved leader tan the business in a way that if a rainy day came, we would be in a better position than most to deal with it. Except we ain’t. And so you can only deduce from that, that we have been consistently lied to, and I note this morning that he has paid himself 31m in the last ten years as well as all the other little deals he has going on, micro breweries etc.

A summer in which Spurs don’t buy any players, unbelievable, I never thought I’d live to see the day. One problem for nearly all clubs is that most players with a year or more on their contracts are on what now look like very generous wages and they will be in no hurry to move anywhere, certainly not for less money. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Danny Rose come back to Spurs and play out the final year of his contract in the reserves. And injury prone players like Eric Lamela are going to find no takers, clubs won’t be willing to carry any passengers. Playing maybe one in every five games is not going to cut it. EFL clubs won’t want loan players on Premier League wages and Premier League academies are going to to be overflowing with players not good enough for the first team and too expensive for teams in the Championship. O brave new world.

The good news with all this is that I’ve learnt that cheap toilet roll is just as good, if not better 😏, than expensive stuff….happy days

ENIC will be one of the worse hit over the next year or so, but long term this will mean very little to their investment…..yet again the fans will suffer and pay the price, even the jam has run out of sugar…..ENIC Out…
