Jose Mourinho must avoid doing an Arsenal or Man Utd | Opinion

By Bruce Grove -

If you look at the Arsenal and Man Utd squads you can very quickly identify a load of players that are surplus to requirements and present nothing but a drain on the club.

Huge wages, the unhealthy atmosphere in the dressing room and the undermining of the managers have been clear problems that those two clubs have had to deal with and continue to do so.

When you keep high profile players at a club that contribute little, take a massive salary and have friendships with other players that they can influence you should not be surprised when things go pear-shaped.

Tottenham have two players in that mould, Danny Rose and Dele Alli. Spurs have done the right thing with Rose and now they have to do the same with Alli.

Having him around if he is not going to be a part of the plans going forward just drains the club financially, creates a distraction and could, if not checked, create disharmony in the squad.

Arsenal has allowed the Mesut Ozil situation to fester for years, United do it all the time and right now they have Paul Pogba and all the negativity he brings.

Mourinho has to avoid making similar mistakes, once a player becomes surplus to requirements then he needs to be jettisoned.

Alli must be sold in January if he has not made it back into Mourinho’s plans, Rose is of course in the last year of his contract and so it may not be so easy to leverage him out of the door but at least it is minimal in terms of time and will not run for years.

It is a shame what has happened with Alli but time has moved on and Mourinho simply does not need anyone around the club that can upset the balance.

Dele will be difficult to shift because his wages are too high for most clubs. I like the guy and hope he gets his head down and works hard to regain some form.

The reality is that he’s not going to get a place ahead of any of our front three, and he’s not got the game to fit into the midfield. he doesn’t quite fit any more. He played his best just off Kane but we don’t play like that any more. So he’ll have to settle for more of a bit part role if he wants to stay.

Yes it’s a sad state of affairs. Rose has done himself no favours. I wish we’d have sold him a few seasons ago.

What’s been resolved with Rose?He is still pulling his salary like Ozil and has said he intends to see out his contract.unless something happens in January he will leave for free in the summer.Levy won’t get a penny and Rose will have wasted a year of his career, which considering his age and his stance over the whole episode, will doubtless see him struggle to get somebody to believe in him again.
