Spurs loanee gives a glimpse into the racist abuse he has suffered

By Bruce Grove -

Ryan Sessegnon has become the latest Premier League star to reveal the sickening racist abuse that he has suffered from individuals on social media.

Most BAME footballers around the world have been subjected to vile racism for a long time now and Sessegnon posted a screenshot of one such attack he has just suffered, adding that it doesn’t even bother him anymore.

The winger who was sent on loan to Hoffenheim this season was called a number of racial slurs, one of which was a “slave”.

He said as quoted by Mail Online: ‘Honestly unbelievable smh (shaking my head). The craziest thing is I’m not even surprised anymore. Disgusting.’

He received the abuse on Monday night and the report claims that the offending user account was removed from Instagram shortly after that.

He is the latest Premier League player to suffer abuse after the likes of Wilfred Zaha (CNN)

Troy Deeney has also come out to talk about how much racist abuse footballers suffer (BBC).

This is coming after the worldwide protest under the auspices of Black Lives Matter.

Some football matches still observe the Black Lives Matter salute before kick-off, yet it seems that it will take a long time before the abuse ends.

Social media gives a platform to everyone on the planet to say what they like to who they like. And people are surprised that things like this happen?

Should we be outraged that this racist exists? Racists, bigots, criminals, murderers serial killers etc (I could go on) will always exist and always have.

There are actually probably less bigots in the world than at any time in human history. The only difference now everyone has a platform and it only takes on person in billions to do this and the world is suddenly more bigoted.

It’s garbage, you police SM and it goes away. If you don’t you’re in danger of normalising hate. In fact it’s already started.

SM should be banned or changed fundamentally, for the sake of all our futures… you saw it here first! 😂

Black role models should be taken away? Inspirational brothers/sisters ect. No way. Listen. Its hard/difficult being black man. Trust me. You have to be black to know. I ain’t looking any sympathy (I love being black)

Is it linked to his move to Hoffenheim?

My view (I am a white guy so cant really claim to have in depth knowledge, although I did spend 4yrs living in a black community – so saw some come the other way)…so anyway, my view is, the more we talk about “Black lives matter” and “black history month” the more of an issue of race we see. I wonder if we are now at a point in the fight for equality where we need to start getting people to stop talking about great “black” people and move them into the catagory of great people. When I think of figures of history I would most like to meet, Mandela and MLK easily hit the top 5 (maybe even top 2) and its not because they were great BLACK MEN, but because they were (for me) two of the most influential people of their generations, they were great humans (not men, not black, but humans). Both faced adversity and dealt with it in different ways, but in the end, they found a way through the noise to make a real change. So when I see the issue of race dealt with positively, I still think -“your still talking black and white”. As I say, I am not speaking as a person with great understanding of the plight. but maybe I am seeing it from outside looking in.

I don’t think kneeling down for a minutes silence with a fist held high will sort out racism in football or on social media… These degenerates need to be arrested and fined accordingly by the police. Named and shamed so everyone knows. Repeat offenders should take heavier punishment… Actions speak louder than words, or kneels.
