Jose Mourinho discusses Spurs’ VAR history

By Bruce Grove -

Jose Mourinho has suggested that Spurs would have been treated differently if they had a better trophy history after his side conceded a ridiculous penalty against Newcastle United at the weekend.

Spurs seemed to have run away with a 1-0 win from a game that they dominated, but VAR awarded a handball and penalty against them when Andy Carroll headed the ball against an unsuspecting Eric Dier in the Tottenham penalty area. After a lengthy review by VAR, he was adjudged to have touched the ball with his hands, hence a penalty.

Mourinho, whose team faces playing yet another game on Tuesday against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, another one on Thursday in the Europa League and yet another game at the weekend, said he now understands the difference between his team and other big teams who are always winning trophies.

He seems to suggest that teams with big history get it easier than others who don’t have that.

He told Sky Sports via Sun Sports: “It’s just the first one.

“I imagine that Tuesday another one, Thursday another one and maybe Sunday a couple more.

“But this is the respect that Tottenham gets. Tottenham is a big club but it’s a club where our history in terms of trophies is not as big as other clubs.

“I realise that. I’m coaching with a lot of passion, a lot of love.

“I love to be here, I don’t see myself leaving and going to another club because I love it so much.

“But I realise now the difference between clubs with big history and others.”

It was a ridiculous decision, however, it is the laws of the game and not sure that VAR or the ref can be held responsible for the Newcastle penalty. That said, VAR and the ref certainly are responsible for sone other decisions within the game that should have had a different outcome.

As a ref I can simply say, no. Common sense is not allowed when it comes to interpretation of the laws of the game in this situation. In some aspects, yes, but when it comes to handball, the die has been cast.

I agree, but if your arms are within your natural silhouette it is unbelievably deemed ok! Palace got the double whammy too, they got stiffed with one against Everton and then Calvert Lewis nearly caught one, but that wasn’t given. Last year’s controversy was the offside by an armpit, but this year’s is far worse. There we were thinking 2020 could only get better!

It’s the interpretation of the law that is the issue here, what one official deems a handball is deemed not by another, therefore it is the law itself that has become the problem. The game is farcical and becoming increasingly so if it were possible, the situation has to change immediately, because it will not improve anytime soon.

Jose’s talking about throwing the League Cup? Not what I want to hear.

The only good thing to come from this weekend is the start of a proper seige mentality from Jose. Hopefully our squad has the minerals to back Jose n

I listened to the interview with Jose and this article has left extracts from it out. When Jose was talking about this being the first,Tue could be another one and Thursday could be another one he was referring to injuries and not decisions going against us.He was answering a question about Son coming off at half time.

I don’t think it was reviewed because the arm was in the body’s natural silhouette. Ludicrous? Yes, but that is the law. It has to change. Last season the Spanish league had this and it caused all sorts of confusion. A season of this is going to be ridiculous.

From the first decision where a handball was ‘unfairly’ given this season the precedent was set. We all disagree with it, but after what happened in the games prior to ours, it had to be given as a penalty, irrespective of how ludicrous the decision was. As soon as the ball hit Dier’s arm we all knew what was coming. If it had been the other way round and it wasn’t given, we would have been unhappy. Referees are getting the grief, but they are following the directive. I cannot abide referees, the arrogance some portray is sickening, but they have had the subjectivity of decision making taken from them, hence no common sense allowed.
I don’t think we are being victimised, all teams will be getting decisions against them with the current handball law. The clear and obvious error law is a different argument. I do think Man Utd own this at present. How Brighton had a penalty overturned is beyond me, especially after some of the ones they got awarded last season. What Jose is doing is creating a siege mentality, us v THEM, which is good for team cohesion. At least we looked decent. Shame about Son. Another injury, the man is made of fine bone china.

I’m sorry if it is just as simple as saying it is the law then the handball a minute beforehand would have been given as a penalty, same with Ward’s first incident for Palace. Surely the ref can still use common sense when it comes to interpreting the law?

Is the referee not allowed to use any common sense or discretion or must he follow the new laws to the letter? The new law is absurd but surely the referee, having gone to look at the screen, could have ruled it out. I would think that VAR decisions even themselves out over a season and I don’t concede Mourinho’s whinge that clubs without a trophies are treated differently. I have seen most PL managers moan about VAR decisions , including Klopp and Guardiola.

1 week to go, still no striker. Son out with hamstring. In the midst of a Crazy fixture schedule we could do with Someone signing ASAP.
