Tottenham player ratings – should have won even with VAR interference

By Bruce Grove -

Spurs have dropped points in the Premier League yet again after a 97th-minute penalty from Newcastle United earned the Magpies an undeserved point from their first shot on target in the game.

Spurs should have killed the game earlier but after the removal of Son Heung-Min, the team seemed to struggle to find another goal.

VAR took centre stage and Tottenham have every right to feel robbed but the truth is that the game should have been put to bed much sooner.

Hugo Lloris – 6

Was a spectator for much of the game and almost saved the penalty.

Matt Doherty – 6

A constant problem down the right-hand side of attack and he was solid at the back too, however, he has to do better when it comes to tracking back.

Eric Dier – 7

Had a fine game. Unlucky to concede the ridiculous penalty that gave two points away.

Davinson Sanchez – 7

He was on hand to defend everything that can close to him, on the ground or in the air.

Ben Davies – 6

Decent enough and he even managed to get the odd cross in

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 8

His best game for Tottenham so far. Worked hard to make sure Spurs owned the midfield and possession of the game.

Harry Winks – 7

Just maybe, Hojbjerg will make him an even better player. Had a solid day two with several key interceptions.

Giovani Lo Celso – 7

Started most of Spurs attacks and almost scored from a free-kick.

Lucas Moura – 6

Always willing to run at the defence, but his final ball was lacking. Apart from his goal, he was frustrating to watch.

Son Heung Min – 7

Might have scored a few goals if he played the full game. Hit the woodwork twice in a very impressive outing.

Harry Kane – 6

Looks very committed to providing assists nowadays and got one here. Should have scored but Karl Darlow was in top form.

Subs

Steven Bergwijn – 5

Came on in the second half but could hardly make an impact in the game.

Tanguy Ndombele – 6

Was very enjoyable to watch and looked like the only sub that might have helped Spurs to get the second goal.

Eric Lamela – 6

Almost scored directly from a free-kick.

Players just need to boot the ball at arms rather than try for goal, great innit… they’ve been doing it for a while in Brazil since the rule came it, big problem. They need to change it.

The words “world class “and “serial winner “aren’t your standard line when describing any old coach,Jose was influential in bringing Bale,Reguilon and Doherty to Spurs, they respect his achievements and wanted to play for him.

Sept 27th The Spurs Web wrote Matt Doherty has admitted he has enjoyed working with Jose Mourinho since arriving at Spurs and that the coach’s presence at the club was one of the reasons he decided to move to north London. 19th Sept 2020 www standard wrote Sergio Regulion has revealed his switch from Real Madrid to Tottenham was influenced by the world class Jose Mourinho. Gareth Bale praised Tottenhams ambition when appointing Jose Mourinho as manager, having Jose there is an amazing statement from the club he is a serial winner. World class & serial winner there’s something Poch could never be accused of when talking about his managerial abilities.Dont underestimate how top players feel about playing for Jose they love him it’s the media and rival fans that would convince you otherwise.Hojbjerg was quoted as saying it was a no brainer to sign for Spurs when he knew Jose wanted him.I agree with you if Pep wanted them they might say the same thing but that’s cause good players want to play for the best managers both of them are winners and have the medals to prove it.

When did they say that? If they did it’s the standard line when a player joins a club “I want to work with this coach” etc. Who’s come that we couldn’t have got under another manager?

This generation of players grew up more with Pep etc. When Jose was in his pomp Bale (now 31) was about 15 years old.

Maybe someday you will realise the players we have signed this summer have all said that Jose being the manager was instrumental in them signing for Spurs. They want to be coached by one of the most successful managers in their generation.

It will all balance itself out once we start targeting players arms too. Let’s hope we’ve started practicing it in training also. Can’t beat’m join’m then take over. Chip it over to me and I’ll nod it on to his arm. All’s fair in love and winning

All this putting you arms behind your back in the box, can’t even protect your nuts. Expect some to nuts to be pushed up inside some players soon. Wallop on a bo77ock🌚

Jose likes Davies and Dier, mainly their attitude I think.

Jose is costing us points and games by being too negative and his disregard for attacking invention and flair means we are letting teams back in that should be buried by that point.

When you turn your back it’s impossible to see the ball or the attackers, and he’s an International defender.

Got to agree with all comments on Dier. Last season he had his four game ban and we played better not great but better. This year against Everton he failed to jump and against Newcastle he jumps but gets beaten easily with his back turned and arm away from his body penalty given all day long. The guy is costing us points and games.

Castagne can play.

Doherty’s problem is that he has no pace, similar to Dier and Davies. If Toby plays, not Sanchez, we have a very slow back four and neither Winks nor Hjojberg are quick. I agree that Castagne would have been a much better buy but it’s always down to cost with Levy.

Because Dier had his arm out away from his body in an unnatural position. Would help if the plonker watched the ball when he jumped instead of turning his back.

Well maybe now that Son is out for a bit then our chairman might act, if he doesn’t them I’m convinced he’s secretly a gooner.

If it is the new rules why didn’t we get a penalty when it hit the Newcastle defender clearly from N dombeles cross? We would have had the clean sheet as they didn’t have a shot on target apart from the undeserved penalty.

Castagne would have been a much better buy and I said so at the the time. He’s much younger and can play LB or RB. But of course we had to go for the cheaper option didn’t we?

Son now out with a hamstring injury which it is stated will see him missing until after the Man Utd match. Levy needs to sort out the striker situation soon as. Kane cannot play every game and without him and Son we are F**Ked( does that sound familiar) until Bale comes in. I would also like to see another CB. Dier and Sanchez as a pairing will get mullered by the top teams. Dier is not good at defending crosses in the air or along the ground. Every season he is continually involved in incidents that cost us goals and points. We will win nothing until Dier and back ball Davies are not in the first eleven. I would like to see more from Docherty as well. He came with a good reputation but to-date I have seen nothing much to get too excited about.

Because we can’t keep a clean sheet that’s why. No point in worrying about the pen as it was a pen by the current rules. We will undoubtedly benefit from them at some stage of the season, it’s swings and roundabouts. Everyone is affected like it or not. Eric should not jump with his back to the ball, blame him not the rules.

A couple of positives in Winks , much improved today, and Hjojberg. Son is now out with a hamstring and I thought Kane looked knackered in the last twenty minutes and should have come off, but of course we don’t have another No 9. Notwithstanding the nonsense hand ball, we should have had scored enough goals so that it didn’t matter.

If we lost 3 points against Everton and got cheated from another two points today does that not make 5 points dropped, not four.

Lo Celso is too Ying and Yang for me, for every good thing he does he gives the ball away in equal measure. Looks a bit lightweight and easily brushed off the ball and without the ability to thread a ball through a defence except maybe once out of four times, and his shooting ability is weak from open play. Bring back Eriksen.
Forget the pen we should have buried them long before that. Kane’s finishing today was woeful and it’s on days like this that another striker needs to come off the bench. He’s not getting any younger and needs to be rested to be effective throughout the season.
But we dominated the game and on another day it could have been 6-1, so not too much to get depressed about yet. I’m excited by N’Dombele’s cameo role and thought he did more in that short time than the rest of the midfield put together. I think he is the one that will make the difference in an AM role this season.

“VAR took centre stage”

Oh for the luv of God! No it didn’t, the referee & the new handball rule took cente stage. What’s wrong with people?

A footy match is occurring circa 1978.

Fan 1 – Bloody Nora! What a crap decision, that was never a penalty. Even all the pundits on the radio said it wasn’t, and my mate ‘ere who supports the other team reckons it was a bad decision.

Fan 2 – I know, what’s the bleedin whistle playing at, anyone could see it was never a pen. They should take the whistle off the ref then bad decisions like that couldn’t happen, it’s ruining the sport.

Fan 1 – Yeah but then you wouldn’t have all the good decisions.

Fan 2 = Oh shut up, you’re ruining my rant.

Difference between a team that wins things and one that doesn’t. That’s four points dropped already from home games
