Transfer Insider Dean Jones has given the latest update on Tottenham’s pursuit of Brentford keeper David Raya.
The Spanish shot-stopper has been heavily linked with a move to the North London club, but recent reports suggest that Spurs may withdraw from the deal due to Brentford’s asking price.
Fabrizio Romano reported last week that the goalkeeper has agreed personal terms with Tottenham and that the only thing left is for the two clubs to agree on a fee for him.
However, Jones claims that Spurs are not willing to meet Brentford’s valuation of £40 million for their star keeper.
Dean Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport, revealed that Spurs have already begun searching for alternative options. Although they still regard Raya highly, they are not prepared to meet Brentford’s asking price.
He said:
“Spurs can’t wait around for Raya, so they are looking at their other options. They still rate him — just not at £40m. This is a big summer for them and [Ange] Postecoglou needs to find a keeper that fits his philosophy, but at the moment this is about £10m away from the max Spurs would pay.
“Raya needs a move, so it’ll be interesting to see how he reacts now. Is he going to sit there at Brentford, or does he agitate for a move? It’s going to be tempting.”
Tottenham are actively looking to sign a goalkeeper to replace club captain Hugo Lloris.
He has already admitted his desire to leave the club and Spurs are reportedly also willing to sell him after another poor season from him.
His contract expires next summer and they will hope to cash in on him this year.
Tottenham have reportedly identified Guglielmo Vicario as one potential alternative to David Raya.
The search for a suitable Lloris replacement remains a top priority for new manager Ange Postecoglou, who aims to find a keeper that aligns with his playing philosophy.
