Is Jermaine Jenas right about Dele Alli?

By Bruce Grove -

Jermaine Jenas isn’t confident that Dele Alli will be at Spurs when this transfer window closes, contrary to what Jose Mourinho thinks.

Alli has been struggling to play regularly for Spurs recently with his poor form also costing him his place in the England national team.

The midfielder played in Tottenham’s Europa League game against Shkendija on Thursday, but he lasted just 60mins.

He had missed Spurs’ previous two games against Lokomotiv Plovdiv and Southampton.

His place in the starting XI is no longer guaranteed and PSG has been linked with a move for him this summer, but Mourinho claims that he expects the midfielder to stay put.

The French side hasn’t succeeded in taking him away from the Tottenham Stadium yet, but Jenas reckons that he will likely leave the club before this transfer window closes, considering what has been happening to him at the club.

“I don’t feel like it’s one that can be reconciled, I feel like it’s a parting of the ways,” Jenas said on the Friday Football Social on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Everything Jose does is to get a reaction,

“I would be concerned if I was Dele. He has always been loved by everyone and every manager.

“No doubt that his form has dipped over the last 18 months, he knows that more than anybody.

“Two weeks ago I would have said, if I was Dele Alli, I would stay and dig in. But all the signs lead to getting him out of there.

“At the end of the season there’s the Euros – he would be desperate to get back in Gareth Southgate’s thoughts. The only way he is going to do that is by playing football and scoring goals again.

“Right now it doesn’t feel like Jose Mourinho or Spurs is the place for him. I’d be looking to move on now.”

What do you think of Jenas’s comments? Personally, I think he is wide of the mark and I see Alli sorting it out and getting his act together, at Tottenham.

He has been woeful for 18 months now. Anyone rember getting dropped if you were poor for one game 2 games. I have no idea what has happened to Dele but honestly , I wish him no ill, I don’t care. Let him go re invest in a more suitable player.

My guess is that Dele’s best Spurs days are behind him, whether he hangs around or not.

Jenas was the guy who was sold to us as someone full of promise and the next big thing. Ali was a bit like that although he was younger. For me the all or nothing told a lot about Ali. Lazy in training and someone who won’t listen as he seems to think he has made it or knows better. If he does not knuckle down he could end up being another jenas promise a lot but in the end achieved nothing.

Are there clubs queuing to sign him? JJ just spouting rubbish, as do most of sports journalists.

I get the impression that Dele will struggle to come to terms with his role in the squad now.Perhaps Mourinho’s way of playing just won’t suit him. However I expect him to be here when the window closes,as Levy will probably price him out of a move.

Jenas banging the ‘Jose is THIS’ drum – Spurs are a different club for him, we work a different way, he can’t instantly replace players like for like in the market and he doesn’t have a black chequebook. He might just have to stick by some players through bad attitude or form.

Jenas looking at it from his own personal perspective in which his career was full of promise but achieved little.

The number 10 role is difficult against packed midfields and defenses obviously easier on the break. For me Dele over the years has gone from a head up player looking to rival Harry to score to a player whos playing with his back to goal to often. The team at its recent best was on broken play when Harry dropped into midfield and Dele burst into the central role, really working the central defenders. The dynamic between the attacking players has changed, Moura is a very good player but alters our system. The driving play from Lo Celso or Ndombele you would think, would help Dele.
I hope Dele listens to the manager and coaches at the end of the day they want the best out of him. I’m not sure of the relationship behind the scenes but players who played instinctively when younger do not always take on board the info to get the best out of them.

Hard one to call as it depends a lot on Dele’s reaction. Things looked very bad with Mou and N’Dombele at one stage but that has been resolved to everyone’s benefit. Whether Dele is made of stern enough stuff to rise to the challenge remains to be seen.
