Is Andre Villas-Boas right to take credit for Gareth Bale becoming a superstar?

By Bruce Grove -

Andre Villas-Boas is taking credit for turning Gareth Bale into a global superstar.

Villas-Boas was Tottenham’s manager in Bale’s last season at the club as he impressed so much and was, at times, unplayable in the Premier League.

His individual performance in the 2012/13 season earned him his move to Real Madrid, and Villas-Boas has now claimed that he made the tactical switch that unlocked the Welshman’s potentials.

He claimed that Bale had come to him and complained of not playing to his full potential, in a bid to help the attacker flourish, they both agreed to a tweak to his formation which offered Bale greater freedom and it transformed his career.

The Portuguese coach told Copa90 via Sun Sports: “Gareth was feeling that he wasn’t unlocking his full potential. He came into my office one day and said ‘Boss, I’m not happy, things are not going well for me.’

“‘Ok,’ I said, ‘I can try and change to a 4-4-2 formation and you can play free at the top with Emmanuel Adebayor and I can move Gylfi Sigurdsson to the left, cutting in.

“This is when Gareth starts on that run of games where he scored, I think for five or six games in a row, and then the results exploded, and his career exploded from that moment on.”

Bale joined Real Madrid and he became one of the best players in the world playing alongside, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Is AVB right to take credit for Bale’s transformation or was it going to happen regardless of who was the manager at the time?

Everyones different. Some people still have sound minds at 80 and 90… Others develop dementia or brain loss decades earlier…. Biden doesnt seem competent does he… But Trump is a lunatic.. I thought he was a wally before he took over, but he’s outdone himself on a weekly basis ever since.

Bale became the complete superstar against Inter Milan in the CL. Scoring that hat trick and making the world class Maicon look bang average. That was the game which proved to the world and himself he had the mentality to be the best…Harry Redknapp should be praised for moving him up to the wing.. It was under him he flourished. Only Bale himself can take the credit for what he became. I can’t imagine he learnt much from AVB.

True but for a guy who knew nothing about politics he tore the establishment to threads affectionally becoming a benevolent dictator as opposed to a tyrannical one!

He’s got too much power for his age 74. What do old khunts care about the state of the world in 15-20 years time say. No leader should be older than 55. 60 max.

Briefly treading politics, just watched an interesting profile of Donald Trump on BBC2 (Part 1). Like him or loathe him charismatic Trump the master of accusing the media of fake news, yep he invented that word, seldom reads any briefs but hitting the sola plexus resonating with his audience is the master showman of the theatre of mass communications. I love deals, I have made my whole life making deals. I love it. I love it. Calling him rocket man, one minute threatening to destroy N Korea, the next minute milking the adulation of walking the red carpet shaking hands with Kim Jun Un arguably making the world a safer place makes an excellent sci fi movie. I ask myself pure fantasy is this really happening?, the first American President to have a summit with the N Korean leader. It did. Oh boy it did, Have fired numerous personnel during his tenure and accused his critics of political witch hunts, whilst he will probably be dethroned in the coming USA elections by sleepy Joe, I kind of got a soft spot for Trumpy who probably wont accept defeat gracefully. Bad loser. Thats not his style. We know that!
