“I’m sure Jose will have the last say” Pundit reckons future of Tottenham star is down to Mourinho

By Bruce Grove -

Gareth Bale has recently shown the sort of form Tottenham envisaged when they landed him on loan in the summer.

The Welshman enjoyed his first spell as a Tottenham player and earned a big-money move to Real Madrid after dominating the Premier League.

After winning all the major trophies in club football, he struggled to find a place in Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid team and was sidelined for the best part of the last two seasons.

Spurs brought him back in the summer with confidence that he can rediscover his form of old.

The attacker has taken time to get going, but his performances in the last few games have been impressive.

Spurs now face a decision over his future and they will have to decide if they want to keep him for another season at the end of this campaign.

Noel Whelan says he will only stay if Jose Mourinho pushes to keep him beyond this season.

Asked if he thought it would be easy for Spurs to strike another deal for Bale, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah, you’d think so.

“I’m sure Jose will have the last say. He won’t come down to peer pressure from fans or anybody else. Jose knows what he wants and the chairman will back that, I’m sure.

“Like I say, there’s no friends in football. There’s no love just because you’ve been at a club before.

“Jose will choose what he feels best is best for Tottenham Hotspur. Gareth Bale’s got until the end of the season to prove he’s worthy of a contract.”

Bale was involved in 5 games between Jan 20 and turning up at Spurs. Something I read on this blog. With that level of involvement & injured what do you think would be the result. He is beginning to prove his worth now, patience is a virtue is an old saying. 6 goals in his last 6 games – Almost turned it around against the spammers an assist for Moura and hit the bar, and is getting better with every game. I hope he is still with us next season we will reap the benefits before then but I am an optimist. Always handy as a Spurs Fan …. cheers

So you are now seriously pitching that wages and transfer fees have absolutely nothing to do with it?

Of course your pick up the odd rough diamond who ends up being good but also cheap, but these deals are generally rare in the bigger picture.

I like PEH but he’s currently one of the better players in a mid table Premiership side who are underperform for whatever reason, so of course he looks especially good.

Would you pick up a 25 goal a season Premiership forward for 15m? No you wouldn’t do your theory doesn’t stand up when trying to assemble a top level side.

Doherty looks like bad value so far st the same price, PEH is the exception to the rule.

If that side was worth money, it was because Pochettino got them playing so well collectively. It was his coaching that added value to a relatively cheaply assembled younger squad.

City, Liverpool for the last couple of years, Chelsea, Utd have all won stuff and titles with huge spends compared to us.

In fact apart from Leicester (who’s wage bill at that time was higher than ours incidentally) there has never been a Premiership winner who’s won it without generally large comparative spending.

Jack Walker and Blackburn, his money left and they’ve dropped through the leagues after being the best side in the country.

Your theory is based on nothing tangible or indeed proven. Cheers.

If Botch played the Moose instead of Bentaleb and Mason then he may have won it… Reply to other thread, you have been banging on about Botchs 17th net spend and spurs low net wages for years now, repeatedly stating these ‘facts’ prove that he’s some kind of genius manager. This is illogical and totally out of context.. He came here and inherited a good team and had loads of say who came and who left. For five years 5 or 6 players came in and more than that left. The only good window he had was when Mitchell was scouting the likes of Son Toby Trippier were signed. The rest were all poor. Looking at his Saints signings, again poor as a whole and when he was given a club record signing, that striker who punched a guy, he was rubbish…. Botch was brought in to coach and manage a good team (not negotiate the finances) that had a rising kane coming through and had already had some investment after the bale money. Walker Rose Verts Dembele Lloris etc we had the core already… Just because our players are paid less than others doesn’t mean they are less good.. Just because we paid less for someone doesn’t make them shit. Hojberg is your example there… So its Levy you should be praising or lauding for building the 3rd most valuable team in europe whilst spending low net wages and transfers.. Not Botch… Botch was a marvellous coach, possibly the worlds best, but manager? No. He won nothing while possessing the golden boot boy in his prime and the best defence in the league. He even managed third in a two horse race… In 5 years he achieved multiple losers medals. Arsenal won the fa cup four times with an apparent worse team. Stoke birmingham and portsmouth won a cup. Leicester won the league… Facts

I find it a bit hilarious – will SkySports now begin to question Klopp in the same way they’ve been questioning Jose the last few weeks or so?

“The players don’t enjoy the way he has them playing”
“The players don’t like Klopp’s training”
“Klopp doesn’t play so-and-so often enough”
“Klopp has x games to save his job”

The injury card will probably be played instead, absolving the great German of all blame for the lacklustre sh.t they’ve been serving up in 2021.

And still Kevin Friend managed to find another two minutes to add to the extra four after 90 minutes.

More asinine punditry from another ex-pro with a vacuum between his ears! Spurs don’t need to sign Bale permanently, as he only has one year left on his Real Madrid contract and we have the option to extend his current loan deal to see out the remaining year of that contract.

After the expiration of his contract, Bale would then be a free agent, therefore there is no remotest possible incentive or circumstance under which Levy would even contemplate a permanent deal.

The only question at this juncture is whether we extend the loan deal by another year and the main factor in that equation will be Gareth’s form for the rest of the season. I am sure we all genuinely hope he shows enough to warrant another year, but it is far from guaranteed.

Made me think of this Jonathan Wilson article about football albatrosses and the financial cul-de-sacs they sometimes lead clubs down. It includes this hymn sheet which I too sing from:

“But, at the same time, there is a bizarre willingness to believe in the cult of the winner, the idea that because a player or manager has done something before, he will necessarily be able to do it again – see, for example, the recent career of Jose Mourinho”.

If you think Bale’s performances recently have been impressive, that’s because he really set the bar low for his first 5 months with us.For 250K/week I expect more than the odd flash of what he used to be.I think we all realise he will never reach those levels again. He needs consistency to convince me he’s worth keeping, particularly againsy decent opposition.

As far as Jose making the decision on his future, dream on.Levy will decide and that will likely depend on when crowds are back in the stadia and levy can see shirt sales rocketing.Otherwise he’s back to Madrid.

Wtf slides Noel flipping Whelan know about what goes on at Spurs. If Levy gave our managers any significant ‘say’ we would most likely have one more than 1 League Cup 13 years ago…
