Steven Bergwijn started this season as one of Nuno Espirito Santo’s most trusted men and it looked like he would finally deliver the performances that prompted Spurs to sign him.
However, an injury in the first international break of the season saw him fall out of the starting XI and he has been struggling to get back in.
He hasn’t started under Antonio Conte yet but was still selected for international duty by the Netherlands in this window.
Sky Sports pundit, Michael Bridge says it was a mistake for him to be away from the club now because he would have benefited from training with Conte over the next two weeks.
He told GiveMeSport: “I was disappointed to see Bergwijn called up late for Holland because I think he could really do with two weeks under Conte.”
The Boy Hotspur say
When a new manager comes to a new club, everyone has to impress and it is important to be keen to do so.
Having seen very limited playing time at club level, Bergwijn may not even be involved in the games for his country.
He could easily have turned down the offer so he can win back a place in the Spurs’ starting XI.
But he didn’t and he might spend the rest of the season on the bench because he did not take the opportunity to work one on one with Conte in this international break and impress the new manager.

I remember his good spell for us and he was doing a lot of covering (these were the days when the players used to run) but unfortunately what always springs to mind is that miss at “Whinging/Whining/Entitled FC”
Go back to Holland young man.
Possibly, along with Gill, Conte’s tactics are not good news for our wingers.
He had a decent spell this time last year in the 443, lack of converting chances didn’t help.
Wing back potentially?
Not impressed with Bergwijn so far, hopefully he can improve under Conte. Weak finisher. Good runner but nothing at end of it most times.
Does he have a choice? I think if he gets called up, he has to go.
This is another player i think can thrive under Conte. Once his fitness improves and he gets solid direction from the management team i expect him to be very influential.
Time we start looking what it means to represent your country. Yes sometimes the scenarios says no remain at the club. No one is saying the same for Rodon who hardly dress but is a starter for his country. While the club pays the salaries as fans we need to respect the players who wants represent their nations. It does not mean they are less loyal to the clubs.
The manager is not going take you to the big dance without the investment into getting qualified.
