Gareth Bale’s turn of pace impressed Paul Merson when he skinned Charlie Taylor in Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Burnley.
Bale scored twice in the game and showed why Spurs wanted him back from Spain in the summer.
It was a game where he finally proved he can still deliver a solid performance in the Premier League.
There have been doubts about his ability to replicate the form he showed during his first stint at Tottenham.
After a slow start, he looks to finally be hitting top form as he followed his goal-scoring performance in the Europa League against Wolfsberger with two goals and an assist against Burnley.
However, it wasn’t just his goals that impressed Merson, but his explosiveness when he ghosted past Taylor in the game.
Merson reckons this could be the start of his resurgence, but he needs to deliver a similar performance in a big game.
“The one thing I liked about him, when he got the ball on the right side and knocked it past Charlie Taylor like he was just standing there,” said Merson on Sky Sports.
“I thought ‘wow, that was Gareth Bale’. He was lightning quick, not just a good player but he had that turn of pace.
“When he did it to Taylor, I thought ‘this lad could be back’. But, how is he going to be when it’s a big game, and the full-back he’s playing against is going the other way and he’s got to come back with him?”
