Hugo Lloris discusses why former Spurs midfielder Dele Alli had to leave

By Eddie Razo -

Last month, Tottenham Hotspur decided to part ways with Dele Alli after seven years with the north London club. The 25-year-old left for Everton FC on a performance-based transfer which could be worth up to £40-million.

In an interview with The Times, Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris sensed it was inevitable that his former teammate would leave the club. Furthermore, the Frenchman expects Alli to start showing the footballing world precisely what he is capable of with a new start at Goodison Park.

“I really like Dele. We had some great times at Spurs, but also, it’s important that players find new challenges,” Lloris said.

“Sometimes, the new challenge is not at the same place. Dele has to go to another place, but the most important thing is I want to see Dele with a smile.”

The France international adds that he’s seen many players and managers come and go at the north London club. The 35-year-old believes what Alli suffered is part of the natural cycle of being a footballer.

“I wanted Dele to enjoy football, and I know it was a bit complicated the last two years for him. A lot of inconsistency in terms of games played, but that’s part of the career,” Lloris added.

“It’s never easier for anyone, even the best players in the world have some up and downs.”

For Tottenham, they’ll want to see Alli do well with Everton, considering the amount they could receive should the midfielder rediscover his past form. Lloris, like most of his former teammates, wants to see Alli do well for the remainder of the season and going forward.

He’s gone, let’s concentrate on the problems we still have which appear to be running deep despite offloading the apparent bad eggs of the squad in recent times.
