How Mourinho Flicked The Switch Before Ludogorets Clash Last Night

By The Boy -

It has emerged this morning that José Mourinho’s penchant for mind games hasn’t diminished any over the years. The Royal Antwerp loss really annoyed him, and rightly so, the mindset that says, ‘aw heck, it’s only a Group game‘ is not acceptable. These boys need to get into the habit of winning every single time that they play. This is the fundamental of a wining mentality – the mentality that the footballing world applauds Harry Kane for having…

Despite what the gaffer had posted on Instagram after the previous game and his snarled comments to the press, it would appear that he didn’t waste his time going into detail with his players – that was until the day if the Ludogorets match, in fact, just before the game.

The impact of this would have been sizeable, and the speed with which Mourinho has rotated the squad will have left nobody in any doubt as to the process. José made 9 changes from the Royal Antwerp game, and 6 changes when we played Brighton. Two games on from that Royal Antwerp loss and José has recorded two wins. Spurs are back on track.

I’m just asking the question about how good we are compared to our rivals over the course of the season. That’s moaning is it?

Being second now means nothing if we finish the season outside the top four. I don’t expect that to happen, I expect top 4.

You Jose/Levy cultists don’t like any questions asked do ya? 🤔 😂

Make no mistake, Antwerp were no mugs, solid mid-table Prem quality, and we all know we can’t be relied upon to win those games just by turning up.

2nd in the league, winning games, playing… better than OK (mostly), still in all comps.

I suspect that if we win the league you’ll still find a way to moan about it looool.

I think the transfer window went as well as it probably could have, given the current world we are living in, and the fact that all of a sudden the revenue to pay for the stadium has dried up. I also like the idea of loaning players, such as Vinicius for example, not spending 40 odd Million then finding out he is not suited to the premier league. But:
Joe Hart: Prem winner, experience, and did you hear him barking out orders last night, something we needed ‘Behind you Lucas’ !!
Joe Rodon: No, not a Vertongan Replacement, but the lad must have got some good reference from Bale and Davies, plus the scouting network.
Matt Doherty: Shown enough in his first few games to suggest we have a good player on our hands, and also has made Aurier up his game !
PEH: As you say, just what was needed.
Gareth Bale: We all got what we have all wanted for the past few years
Sergio Reguillon: Potentially world class, and already doing great things
Carlos Vinicius: I like this lad, he needs a little bit of luck to get off the mark, but i think we will see good things..
Most importantly, Mourinho has not just randomly brought in loads of players, he has addresses problem areas. I would say judge him at the end of this or next season, he has left nobody in doubt as to the levels required at our club…

I’m not saying the transfer window had anything directly to do with Jose, I’m just aiming the question about how strong in quality depth we actually are.

We got the big guns out last night and won as you’d expect. Jose’s no fool, he knows that the team that faced Antwerp would have got beaten last night.

To keep the Ropey campaign on track and relatively routine until the bigger teams drop into it, we couldn’t afford to lose last night. To me this wasn’t mind games, more a necessary move to ensure we got the three points. If it gives the backup players a wake up call too then great, that wasn’t the soul intention on Jose’s part. It was probably the right policy.

I see the ‘best Spurs fan in the world’ is still jumping on anyone he thinks aren’t in line with his little cult fing… massive yawn here… 😂

Also putting the Antwerp loss in perspective, they lost their home game to LASK last night.

Against Antwerp we had too many changes, you can get away with against a team like LASK at home but Antwerp are top of their league.

Secondly, I would question the collective quality of our ‘B’ team. A team of players that might work individually as backup or rotation players to the first eleven, might not work as an 11 of their own.

Judging by the performances of Vince and Doherty and Bergwijn last night, even as individuals they don’t look worthy of a first team place at any time.

Which all brings me to the point; we still have Aurier as our best right back, lack a quality striker to backup Kane and haven’t replaced Vertonghen’s quality either.

Regulon looks a very good attacking left back of quality and Bale needs no introduction. PEH is the kind of player we have needed since Wanyama’s knees went.

I wasn’t as impressed with our transfer window as the hype suggested we should be. We have backup and depth (which is a basic requirement for any top team), apart from that we look capable. How capable, only the season will reveal to us.

It’s easy to get a bit carried away with the bubble of your own club’s transfer business. Remember, we are a club that signed nobody for 12 months not long ago. So of course we get excited by players coming in.

Compared to the clubs around us in the league I wouldn’t say we look any stronger than most of them. However, with Kane Sonny and Bale good things can always be achieved.

Right now we are particularly feeling the departure of Verthongen who, used sparingly could have still been useful. He was a very important part of the furniture and nothing has been done to replace him so far.

‘Stellar’ transfer window? Decent I would say, nothing more…
