Has Serge Aurier done enough to keep himself in contention for a regular starting spot?

By Bruce Grove -

When Spurs signed Matt Doherty this summer, it was meant to be the end of the road for Serge Aurier.

The Ivorian defender was Spurs’ first-choice right-back for much of last season after the club sold Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid.

He quickly developed a reputation for being the most unfortunate player on the pitch often scoring own goals or costing his team points.

His lack of concentration and awareness sometimes can be worrying and it always seems like he was waiting to make a mistake.

It was because of all this that some fans were delighted that the club signed Doherty, who has been a model of consistency for Wolves since they returned to the Premier League.

Aurier was one of the players that Spurs were happy to sell, but they never exactly found the perfect buyer.

He has remained at the club and it seems that he has also won himself serious consideration for a starting spot.

He was a surprising starter in Tottenham’s game against Manchester United on Sunday, and he repaid the faith shown in him by scoring a goal and providing an assist in an assured performance.

That performance will get Doherty sweating now that the transfer window has shut.

Do you think that Aurier has made a comeback? Is he still the same old error-prone full-back or has the signing of Doherty brought out the best in him?

As far as I’m concerned, you don’t play fir a club like PSG for years in their defence winning trophies if your not of a standard.

He’s proved it.

Even last season with his faults, his stats in certain areas were up there with the best in the league.

I’m happy to see him playing well coz believe it or not when he plays well we do.
I think he played that 2-6 battering of Everton.

But what really pleases me is the team spirit I noticed how EVERYONE celebrated with Aurier tapping hom on the head.
Don’t think he wanted to go, & he’s proved himself & his level now a top player has joined him in his position.

Hope that happens in all positions especially with Hojbjerg, hope he raises the games of Winks & Sissoko the next level.

Agree about Davies,he never had the pace for a modern W/FB.Much better suited to LCB where he plays for Wales.

Really good shift. Actually couldn’t have done better.

Worth keeping for sure, he’s a great attacking wing back and even defended soundly on Sunday. Having 2 players competing for each place will improve both.

Yes, it was an excellent window. From the brief appearances we have seen of Davies playing at CB, I agree he is better than Dier in that LCB position and as you say, Tanganga will certainly be an option, once he shakes off his injury.

Agree with all that you say. CB is the weakness and a quick, strong CB would have closed the window nicely. However, let’s be clear- it was still a great window. We must also remember that Davies and Tanganga can both play at CB and I think Davies is better at LCB than LB.

Aurier is just fine as a back up and if he plays like he did on Sunday, he is totally worthy of starting. It seems that ‘competition’ has brought the best out of both Davies and Aurier. We now have our best FB tandems, since the prime of Walker and Rose, when Trippier and Davies were the back-ups. The only manifest weakness in fact, is at CB, we seem strong in all other areas, especially up front, as Jose alluded to.

I think Aurier is great back-up- certainly not a first choice. With all the games we will (hopefully) be playing this season everyone will get a good number of minutes. Spurs had a really good window so hats off to Levy and co.

I think Aurier has improved but he still has 2 big problems.No.1 is whenever he gets possession in their half he always passes backwards and we lose momentum. He is incapable of beating a man. No.2 is his crossing is crap.Perhaps that’s why he doesn’t like to get ahead and put them in!
