Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, most team managers will understand if their team cannot back them to sign top players for positions that need strengthening.
However, what managers will not want is for their top players to be sold when the transfer window reopens, and Tottenham has assured Jose Mourinho that he can keep hold of his best players this summer.
The Lilywhites are one team that sells their players for the right prices, and their fans will have been wondering if this transfer window will see the departure of key personel.
But Mail Sports is reporting that the club has assured Mourinho that his key players will not be sold when the transfer window reopens, and he doesn’t need to worry about that happening.
It claims that Daniel Levy knows that if he sells his top stars this summer, he might get a lot less money due to the financial impact of the coronavirus.
The club is, however, expected to cash in on fringe players and that may include Tanguy Ndombele, who joined them in the summer, claims the same report
This is because the Frenchman has fallen out of favour with Mourinho and it remains unclear if he would be given another full season to prove his worth.
All that said, it is reassuring that Levy has no intention of selling any players that Mourinho does not want to be sold, well, that is how I read it.

That’s my point though, any Football Director at Spurs is just a yes man to Levy’s spending, or lack of.
We had someone very competent in Paul Mitchell but he walked barely a year into the job. He was then credited with good work al RB Leipzig as he was at Saints before hand and now finds himself at Monaco.
So what was the problem at Spurs for Mitchell? I think we all know, the little bald guy…

I take valuations with a pinch of salt £60m,a player is only worth what another club is prepared to pay.The exception to the rule nowadays is you do get a bargain if his contract is in the last year or like Eriksen 6 months. Six months later how much is he valued at today,be lucky to get £30m if Ziyech sold for £34m. You are right about the club should be in control, but with keeping your best players and the fans happy selling them at the top of their game is not a popular choice if you want to keep your manager onboard. The fans would go mental if they were told we have sold Kane now because in a years time we might get £20m less. What happens if a player says I will not sign a new contract but won’t be transferred anywhere either. He runs down his contract and goes on a Free getting millions in signing on fees.
In reality it would be great, but in the real world it seldom happens, you don’t see the better clubs selling their best players unless the players themselves want out.Continho & Hazard both at the top of their game forced their moves.Should we sell Kane or wait till his form drops or his contract run out,or keep him for another year? I don’t think the fans would put up with it if you tell them we had to sell Harry now because if we keep him for another year or so we might get less for him.
Verts is coming up to 33, completely different situation. If s player stays into their 30’s then you know any big sale fee is gone. Eriksen could see that’s Levy was leading the club back to mid table and wouldn’t sign up.
As soon as he left he was valued at 60 million…. You don’t let contracts run down on players.. He was useless the last year he stopped playing. He should have been told 2 years previously either sign a new contract now or you will be sold. Simple. Remember that sol cambell guy. Almost as bad.
When he was worth max value he was happy ,we were happy with him,and Pochettino wouldn’t of wanted him sold. The problem was his form dipped,he fell out of love with Spurs and announced he wouldn’t be signing an extension. Usually fans get upset when they sell players for a loss not when they sell for a profit when the player is going downhill, you’re more upset we didn’t make a bigger profit.Another six months we would have lost out on £16m. Chelsea are just about to lose Pedro & Willian they cost £51m and will get nothing,it happens. We will lose Vertonghen, should we have sold him sooner?
Baldini was a disaster obviously.. But come on all the top clubs (well any pro top tier) has sporting directors.. We are well past the 90s now. Of course a decent or competent one is needed. You say its all about scouting and getting the right players. This is exactly what a sporting director does. They are chief manager of these key decisions and they have to know their football and how to scout talent. Of course it makes a difference ‘who makes those calls’. Players are everything. Who shapes the team is crucial. Man city have had the same guy 8 years. Liverpools Michael Edwards has been praised for his work with klopp….. For ‘the best interests of the team’ we need someone in who can do the job. Like i already said in previous post Levy has proven repeatedly he can’t’ do the job. He’s no football man….. Rather than ‘being told what to do by the board basically’ the real job of sporting director is to work with the manager and scouts to target and sign players. The board will give them whatever financial restrictions are in place and off they go.
The club allowed that situation to happen, if Levy is such a whizz then he’d have given the player a contract ultimatum when he was worth max value and sold or threatened to sell him then. Levy was only worried about the stadium during that period…
You can’t have it every way,the player wouldn’t sign a new contract and wanted out,we got using him up until Jan and still made a profit. If as you suggest he was worth £45m,you would have been complaining Levy was selling your best players.
There was a time when Eriksen would have bagged at the very least 45m but Levy got greedy, tried to be clever and ended up with 15m…

We’ve had Sporting Directors, Baldini spent the Bale money and only Lamela and Eriksen hung about for any length of time. Comolli sold Keane and Berbatov and replaced them with Bent and Pav for example. So the idea that ‘Sporting Directors’ make a blind bit of difference is questionable.
They are told what to do by the board and the ‘coach’ uses what he’s given basically. So they either deny the manager control or give that control to a yes man called a Director Of Football.
I personally think it’s all about good scouting and ambition get the right players, it makes no difference who makes those calls. So long as it’s in the best interests of the team…
I would have kept trips we needed him. Think he wanted to go though. I thought he was worth more than 20mil too. Erikson was sold for pennies compared to his true value. He’s worth a fair bit still hes in his prime and valued much higher now he’s contracted. It’s dumb letting key players contracts running down..We sold Tintin for 16 million, yet his value at Inter last april was over 60 million.. That isn’t good business.. Money in football has changed dramatically in recent years so every player sold should be at a profit… Danny rose cost us 1 million is a good example… You’re right about not replacing them though. Walker trips tintin, none were replaced… Ndombenchboy was supposed to be a Moussa Dembele upgrade which we know now he isn’t.
Just wait until you fail to land a JoMo target Tight Purse.
No “Mr Nice Guy” Poch to give a statement that nobody understands.
He is a top operator in fact Tight Purse put up both your CVs and lets have a dance off.
I still think the Trippier deal was a brilliant bit of business. He cost £3.5m and was with us for 4 or 5 seasons, and when the manager no longer wanted him we sold him for £20m. We also sold Eriksen for a profit after he had been with us for a considerable time too. The worse bit was not replacing them with better players.
I hope this is the case Bruce.. It means Maureen is in fact our MANAGER, opposed to being ‘head coach’.. He needs control of who comes in and out. They have to sing from the same sheet… Spurs in recent times have spent far too much on rubbish.. Levy gets a good price for players such as modric bale walker etc, but tintin and trips plus more were disasters. Our transfer and scouting system needs a shake up.. We are the only club who doesn’t operate with a sporting director. We need one. Levy is not a football sporting director. He’s proved repeatedly he can’t manage all that.
That’s not singing from the same hymn sheet, that’s just discount Danny realising he’ll get more for Kane after the pandemic is over. What would be singing from the same hymn sheet would be Levy supporting Jose in the transfer market NOW when by his own admission prices are low. Can’t have it both ways.
We’re not selling the best players because money is short and we’ll get more money next year. That’s very big hearted I must say, very generous.
What a meaningless article. I’d sing from the same hymn sheet too if Levy was paying me $15 million a year.
Are you Donna Cullen in disguise? What a load of tosh! Mourinho has fallen out with the hierarchy and players of every club he has managed. He could have a fight in an empty room. Levy , inevitably, falls out with the innumerable managers he has sacked, as he ignores their wishes and buys some plonker we have to Google from the French League. The top teams will strengthen ahead of next season, despite Covid 19, as their owners realise that to stay ahead, you have to recruit wisely. Levy will, and already has used Covid 19 as an excuse not to recruit, even though he seldom needs one. Groundhog Day is staring us in the face.
😂 very true.
Levy makes it onto the Times Rich List for the first time this year and the club donates PPE the NHS from the branded face masks the fans pay for.
He’s got all angles covered when using other people’s money, even during a global crisis. What a guy…

LOL, Levy and Mourinho singing from the same hymn sheet, that’s what they said about Levy and Pochettino and look what happened there. The problem with that statement is, even if they were that means we need to get rid of Mourinho too, cause we all know what hymn sheet Levy sings from. It’s not so much a hymn, more like the ABBA song, Money, Money, Money.
