Gareth Bale is big news but Sergio Reguilon is the bigger deal

By Bruce Grove -

Make no mistake, Gareth Bale returning to Tottenham is massive, the prodigal son is coming home and it will, of course, dominate this news cycle.

But the signing of 23-year-old Reguilon is a bigger deal, in my opinion.

The defender will fill a void that has been so lacking in years, Ben Davies is not good enough and Danny Rose certainly was not and the defensive flanks have been an issue that has needed addressing for some time.

If Reguilon adapts to the English game and I believe he will, then we could have a top-class left-back for a decade, that is huge.

Reguilon will be with us for a lot longer than Bale will be, providing Real Madrid do not exercise the buy-back clause and the chances of that happening are slim.

Bale is 31 now and even if he replicates his best days, how long will he maintain that? How many years will we get from him?

It should also be noted that Tottenham does have a decent array of attacking options, that cannot be said of the defence.

Bale returning pulls on the heartstrings, it is beautiful nostalgia and a great story but in the long term, it is just a moment in time, whereas Reguilon is a long term solution to a long term problem.

For me, Bale is definitely big news but Reguilon is the bigger deal.

We can enjoy Sergio for at least the time he is with us because his dream is return to Madrid and make the starting eleven for years to come. The only chance we have of keeping him longer is if he fails to live up to expectations in England and Madrid decline to take up the buyback option. I think he will do well and we will make a small profit on him,but it’s a win win for Madrid.Gareth Bale has always been his idol and will help him settle in his new club all the quicker.

Bale’s always going to be the main man, even allowing for the big gap since he was at Spurs if you watched him for Wales in the past couple of years you’d know why. I’m very happy about Reg too, but with the small proviso that he’s had his success in La Liga mostly over one season not playing for RM. I’m sure we all remember Soldado? Not all players adapt to the PL successfully, Bale can play highest level in any league, put simply he’s a superstar that has been there and got the T shirt to prove it. But he’s a somewhat delicate asset these days and needs to be managed carefully. The pair together are a fantastic deal.

Picking the games wisley, eventually playing in front of a back three, he’s still got 4 years left in him. Its that left wand of his.
