Former Spurs man reckons hot prospect could leave if Tottenham are not careful

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham risks losing one of their top young players this summer if they don’t sort out his new deal soon reckons former Tottenham forward, Darren Bent.

The Lilywhites have had an inconsistent season and one player who has broken into their team this season is Japhet Tanganga.

The young defender was given his debut by Jose Mourinho and he had become an important part of the first team until he was sidelined with an injury.

He is currently on a weekly wage of £1000 on a contract that expires in 2021.

The club is looking to get him on a new deal as soon as possible and have offered him £15,000 per week, but talks of a new contract have stalled at the moment (The Athletic), and Bent warns that he might walk away from the club.

Bent is of the view that Tanganga is good enough to play for any top side and that top teams will be monitoring his situation at the moment and probably hoping that he doesn’t sign a new Spurs deal.

Bent told Football Insider: “Listen, he’s young enough and good enough to go and get a very, very good club. He’s not even got going yet.

“We’ve seen in flashes of how good he can be so we know he’s got the potential to do really, really well. That’s the last thing Spurs want, to see one of their young stars walk out the door for next to nothing.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if one of the top teams look at that situation and think he’d do a job for us – I feel he’s a player who, with some good coaching, he’s got all the attributes to become a top defender.”

Bent is right in the sense that if a new deal is not agreed he will walk, however, I am not totally convinced that Tanganga is as good as he is being made out to be, just yet.

He could be great for sure but it will take time and until then the club is right to not want to pay him over the odds.

Put it this way United are giving Mason Greenwood £40,000 a week at 18 years old and Levy and some fans are worried about spoiling Tanganga who is 21 by giving him the market rate.

You’d think they would have a pretty good idea about Japhet by now seeing as he’s only been with us since he was ten years old. Push the boat out
I say and give him fifteen hundred a week and scare off those so called big clubs.
