Eric Dier has been added to the Tottenham Hotspur chopping block ahead of the January transfer window, according to The Times.
The report from Gary Jacob claims that Serge Aurier, Danny Rose, Victor Wanyama and Christian Eriksen will once again be up for sale.
Spurs wanted to move all of the above players on in the summer to allow the squad to be refreshed with incomings, but the squad turnover was not as high as Mauricio Pochettino’s “painful rebuild” seemed to promise.
Even by his own recent standards, Daniel Levy has been very quiet in January transfer windows under Pochettino’s tenure, only opening the doors at Hotspur Way for Dele Alli in 2016 and Lucas Moura in 2018.
However, following his side’s depressing start to the season, The Times believes Pochettino wants to revisit the squad reshuffle in the winter, and that Dier faces the end of a Spurs career which started with such promise.
Dier made his first Premier League start of the season in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion and was lucky not to be hooked at half time following a comeback which was as rusty as a 2002 Renault Passat.
Pochettino isn’t going to have changed his mind on Dier based on one performance, but the 25-year-old midfielder has regressed in recent times and may need to rediscover his 2014-17 form to save his skin.
I for one hope that he gets that opportunity between now and the New Year.
