Credible journalist names the three positions that he expects Tottenham to strengthen this summer

Football London’s Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold has been holding one of his frequent Q&A sessions and among the many questions he was asked was what sort of players Spurs will look to sign this summer.

The specific question that Gold was asked on the Q&A was, Hi Alasdair. My take on our situation is that we need upgrades on RB and LB also DM and another striker. What chances ?

Gold responded with the following

” I can see a right-back, defensive midfielder and another striker. Not too sure whether they will see left-back as a priority with Davies there now and Sessegnon for the future, with Cirkin seen as a big talent coming through. “

I like Gold and he tends to be fairly accurate with his opinions, he clearly has good inside knowledge of the club and I have heard him ask Jose Mourinho questions at almost every press conference since the restart.

If Gold is right then the futures of Serge Aurier and Tanguy Ndombele must surely be in question, whereas, a new striker is basically widely acknowledged as a given, albeit, only in a backup role.

It will be interesting to see if Golds opinion plays out and that Tottenham does indeed bring in a new right-back, defensive midfielder and striker. They certainly do need to.

Yet Chelsea are in a FA Cup final and heading for the Champions League. I see what you are saying, but Chelsea are getting their house in order now for next season. I sincerely hope we are not listening to Jim White screaming in October to see what we have in store. We are though rumoured to be signing a guy who plies his trade in the Chinese League whilst Chelsea are snapping up young, Ch Lg ready talent. Mourinho is a better manager and coach than either Frank or Ole, but Frank ripped Spurs a new one at Stamford when we played them and Ole got 4 points out 6. This ultimately comes down to money. I don’t trust Mourinho will be given the players he needs to be successful by Levy.

Since Mourinho took over 25 games ago we have 7 more points than Chelsea. We were 12 points behind now its 5. So we are currently the better side ,the points don’t lie. I don’t rate Chelsea or fear Utd either.Liverpool & City are miles ahead of the rest. Chelsea have more points than Poch & Jose combined and this is what counts for our league position. Even if we don’t as likely make any stellar signings but bring in say three players in the positions most needed I am more than confident under Jose that we will compete with Chelsea and Utd next season. Our goals conceded are only three better off,but that’s the combined total of Poch & Jose, under Jose things have improved.Lastly we have the better coach who given time and support with a few additions and a pre season under his belt can prove his worth.

Chelsea, with that defence is still ahead of us and we can’t catch them, the table doesn’t lie-they have been better than us. They have only let 3 goals in more than us too, we are hardly stellar! Chelsea will need to improve their defence, sure, but so do we and they are building a strong squad now! We’ll be leaving it to October if Levy follows script haggling over £5m here and a loan fee there. I can’t imagine their spending will stop at Havertz either. If Levy had built a strong squad we would have easily been third this season, with either Poch or Mourinho. Levy gambled on what we had to keep us in the top 4 and relied on both Kane and Son not getting injured. Eventually, if you keep making the same bet your luck runs out. Levy left us short, plain and simple. Even with a transfer ban, a newbie manager and losing Hazard, Chelsea were amazingly better equipped than us! Next season we are going to excruciatingly park the bus against most teams, like Newcastle, and play on the counter. We won’t let many in, we will more than likely win more than we lose but it will be a hard watch. Now, when the public are allowed back in will they care about results or performances? Time will tell. Paying top dollar to watch what we are producing may not be up everyone’s street. I’m not saying anyone is better than Kane or Son, they are our only 2 world class players, but after possibly Lloris, Chelsea have better players in all other positions including a 5 man bench. And we have to compete with them, Utd, City and Liverpool to get in the top 4. That is some task, no?

Give me Kane & Son over Werner & Ziyech any day. Havertz will be a great player but £80m – £90m is a lot of money.Their defence will be their weakness currently worst in the top ten.

More to the point has he the money to do anything about it. I wouldn’t be surprised if Aurier was here next season.

I’m still not entirely sure about Serge. I well remember the amount of time we put up with and complained regularly about Walkies; but there was so obviously a strong and pacy right back in there, it just took a few years for his better qualities to subsume his worst. I feel the same way about our Aurier. Wonder whether Maureen has the patience or the belief?

Exactly Kane needs resting every now and then something he didn’t get under Poch. We will (hopefully) be involved in 4 competitions and who’s to say Jose won’t play 2 strikers in some games. Plenty of games to go around..

Pretty much what any sane Spurs fan, most on here, has said. To push on though they need to be really high quality. Let’s say we get Castagne, Hojbjerg and Milik. How strong does that make us when Chelsea are signing Werner, Ziyech and possibly Havertz? City and Utd will buy, whilst Liverpool need to too. It’s going to be a case of being underwhelmed again. When was our last ‘wow’ buy? I was excited by Eriksen, Son and Dembele. Not much to get excited for me since.

A second striker must know he’ll get games, what with Kane’s ankles.
