Chelsea, Tottenham condemn homophobic chant heard during EFL Cup match

By Eddie Razo -

Wednesday’s first-leg EFL Cup semifinal match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge resulted in a 2-0 result for The Blues, taking an upper leg in the two-leg tie. However, while some will focus on what took place on the pitch, something important happened in the stands.

There were homophobic chants heard during the match from sections of Tottenham Hotspur supporters. Both clubs have condemned the supporters engaging in those chants as both clubs released statements regarding the issue.

Spurs began their note by saying they were disappointed by the behavior of members from their section. The north London club added that their work with the LGBTQ+ fan group Proud Lilywhites, they aim to be a club that’s welcoming and has an inclusive environment.

“No one should suffer discrimination because of their sexual orientation and/or their gender identity, and we urge supporters not to use this chant,” the statement said. “There is no place for discrimination at Tottenham Hotspur.”

Meanwhile, a Chelsea spokesperson stated that it’s a disgrace that these chants continue to be heard at stadiums.

“It’s disgraceful that discriminatory chants like this are still being heard in stadiums,” the spokesperson said.

The match between Chelsea and Spurs wasn’t the first time this chant occurred. Everton, Liverpool, Leeds United, and Watford condemned their supporters for targeting Chelsea players with homophobic chanting earlier this season.
