I resent this obsession the media has of footballers having to have an opinion on everything. I can’t put myself in Dele Alli’s shoes, or that of any other black Premier League player, to know how the recent events and riots have affected them, and wouldn’t dare to assume.
If Dele wants to stand up and support the #BlackLivesMatter campaign then I applaud him and every person – of every ethnicity – who shows this compassion and understanding. But he shouldn’t be expected to fight this fight just because he is a famous man of black origin.
Don’t ask him about it in every interview. He doesn’t have a responsibility to be a voice of hope. If he wants to be, let him do it on his own terms.
